According to The Arc, Disability Pride Month is an opportunity to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of the disability community. July marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), landmark legislation that broke down barriers to inclusion in society.
July is also Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, which is intended to build awareness of the health disparities faced by racial and ethnic minority and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations. According to NAMI, in 2008, July was designated as the Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month by the U.S. House of Representatives. Bebe Moore Campbell was committed to creating safe spaces for people in communities of color to connect with others who share similar experiences and cultural backgrounds.

The Department of Health (DOH) has posted draft rule language and an ethical guideline around the new certified peer specialist credential. The draft language is still subject to change, and DOH would appreciate your feedback on the proposed rule and guide.
There are workshop opportunities to review the draft language in July and August. The July dates are to review the language and discuss any concerns, and then we’ll make the changes and present the rules again in August with any changes we made in July.
If you are unable to attend, you can still provide your comments by emailing Ted Dale or the peer support team at DOH.
The Washington Peer Network provides comprehensive and accessible training and support for peer counselors across our state.
