Annual one-night count shows fewer people experiencing homelessness

Washington's annual “Point-in-Time” count showed 683 fewer people experiencing homelessness, although homelessness numbers increased in some individual counties.

The “Point-in-Time” count, overseen by Department of Commerce, is a snapshot of people experiencing homelessness on a single night. The annual count is part of the federal government’s effort to provide reliable data on the U.S. homeless population.

Infusing trauma-informed approach into healing, well-being, prevention & recovery

The Health Care Authority (HCA) is offering free, trauma-informed approach training throughout Washington, July through September 2019.

Federal funding supports these free trainings, which are offered in partnership with facility hosts.

Snapshot: blending FCS and WISe for families in Yakima

On July 9, HCA’s supported employment program manager, Dawn Miller, gave an overview of how to blend Foundational Community Supports and Wraparound with Intensive Services (WISe) to help families in Yakima. It is one of many professional training programs taking place around the state supporting the professionals who help  people find and keep homes, jobs, and good health.


Removing behavioral health stigma, one story at a time

One of the most effective ways to counteract substance use disorder and mental illness stigma is through stories of those who have lived experience with these issues.

Two members of HCA’s Behavioral Health Advisory Council share their stories of hope as part of the Council’s efforts to remove stigma.

Trudi Inslee visits Spokane for first-hand look at housing needs

First lady Trudi Inslee (second from left) heard from nonprofit groups, shelters and the Spokane City Council last week on homelessness and housing.

First Lady Trudi Inslee traveled to Spokane recently to discuss housing, homelessness and youth services with nonprofit organizations, local leaders, and elected officials.

"We need to one-by-one help people and help the community realize these people are not a threat to them, they are not criminals, and homelessness is not a crime," said Inslee. "We need to help them get beyond the crisis that put them in this situation."
