A Message from Secretary Senn: Federal Government Shutdown Impacts on Families - Resources and Guidance

With steep increases in health insurance premiums, federal worker layoffs, and the lack of federal funding for nutritional programs (SNAP and WIC) due the ongoing federal government shutdown, we are already seeing a significant increase in parental stress and economic hardship for families.

If you or someone you know is struggling to meet their basic needs, like food, transportation, child care, heating, and other essentials, visit DCYF’s Basic Needs Community Resource Directory

To locate a local food bank near you, visit:

DCYF also continues to monitor the impacts immigration enforcement has on families. We know that when parents are detained, children may be left behind. In addition, the atmosphere of fear weighs heavily on communities and is leading to absences from work, school and child care.

Given recent events, we urge families of mixed immigration status to identify a caregiver for their children if they were to be detained. You can find immigration safety planning documents and other resources here: Resources for Families Impacted by Immigration-Related Concerns (Español | Soomaali)

I also want to once again provide our immigration-related guidance for caregivers and providers, as well as other community resources:

I recognize that this is a stressful time for all of us. Be good to yourselves; we are in a marathon, not a sprint. Together, we will continue to serve children and families, regardless of immigration status, to help keep them safe, supported, and connected.

In partnership,

Tana Senn

Secretary
