Lakota Seasons

Though calendar types vary from one American Indian tribe to the next, nearly all tribal calendars begin in the spring. To Native people, spring symbolizes the start of a new year through the birth of new plant and animal life. Learn how the Lakota Oyate observed the changes occurring with each new moon, and each moon is identified in descriptive terms by the occurrences of that month:

Tribal Topic of the Week

“For us, warriors are not what you think of as warriors. The warrior is not someone who fights, because no one has the right to take another life. The warrior, for us, is one who sacrifices himself for the good of others. His task is to take care of the elderly, the defenseless, those who cannot provide for themselves, and above all, the children, the future of humanity.”
Chief Sitting Bull, Hunkpapa Lakota leader

Illustration of two pairs of hands of varying skin tones, coming from each corner of the page, clasped together in solidarity.

Each week, DCYF ESIT Tribal Program Consultant, Brian Frisina, provides a key topic to help us get to know our Tribal Nation Partners better.

This week’s term is:

Why We Serve

Native Americans in the United States Armed Forces

Why We Serve honors the generations of Native Americans who have served in the armed forces of the United States—often in extraordinary numbers—since the American Revolution. Learn more:
