If SR 167 is part of your daily rise 'n' grind, buckle up, because WSDOT is making some changes. Here’s the breakdown so you’re not surprised when you see new signs and (hopefully) don’t get an unexpected bill in the mail.
What’s happening?
-
WSDOT is upgrading the tolling equipment on SR 167 to match what’s already in place on I-405.
-
That means new toll zones, new signage, and a few new rules to learn before your morning coffee kicks in.
-
Oh, and about six miles of northbound HOV lane—from Sumner to Pacific—are being converted into a tolled express lane.
When is this happening?
-
Changes are expected to go into effect in fall 2025. Which sounds far off… but as Smash Mouth once said, the years start comin' and they don't stop comin' (that means time moves quickly, Zoomers 🙂↕️).
Why should you care?
-
Idk, you don't have to, but If you carpool and don’t want to pay tolls, you’ll need two things:
-
A Good To Go! account
-
A Flex Pass set to HOV mode (Set it wrong, and the system will happily charge you like you're solo.)
-
Motorcyclists -- yes, even you -- will need a Motorcycle Pass to keep riding toll-free.
-
If you don’t have a Good To Go! account and use the toll lanes? WSDOT will mail you a bill. Yay!!!
Bonus Info: WSDOT plans to give away a limited number of free Flex Passes and Motorcycle Passes later this year, so keep your eyes peeled on WSDOT social media accounts or webpages.
TL;DR:
-
Tolling on SR 167 is getting a tech upgrade.
-
You’ll need the right gear (Flex Pass or Motorcycle Pass) to ride toll-free.
-
Fall 2025 is go time.
-
Good To Go! accounts = fewer headaches and cheaper tolls. www.MyGoodToGo.com.
You’ve been warned. Share with your fellow commuters and avoid future road rage!
