From right, Erica Quallen, deputy director of capital projects, and Martha Machar, finance director, accept the award for Best Capital Plan of 2024
In April, the City of South Burlington was recognized for the Best Capital Plan of 2024 by the Vermont Bond Bank. This is awarded each year at the Bond Bank’s Capital Planning Forum, and South Burlington's Erica Quallen, deputy director of capital projects, and Martha Machar, finance director, were in attendance to accept the award.
The goal of the Capital Planning Contest and the Forum is to “recognize best practices in communities of all sizes while allowing all Vermonters to benefit from exemplary models of capital planning throughout the state.” South Burlington’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) is developed each year and lays out a vision for projects to be undertaken by the City over the next 10 years so that we can be proactive, fiscally responsible, and transparent to our voters.

The South Burlington City Council adopted an amended Sign Ordinance at their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, June 3. The Sign Ordinance was last amended in 2010. This newest version includes some key updates that modernize the Ordinance and offer a greater diversity of signage options for our business community.
The driving force of these proposed amendments was to make sure that the ordinance aligns with the development taking place in City Center, incorporates lessons learned from the pandemic, and accounts for recent rulings on signage issued by the United States Supreme Court.

Summer Reading is for Everyone!
 Summer Reading is for Everyone!
Adventure Begins at Your Library! Join us for reading challenges, in-house programs, and speakers who celebrate all the beauty and adventures that Vermont has to offer in the summer months.
We welcome participation by our youngest readers. Infants, toddlers, and preschoolers aged 0-4 can register for summer reading and pick up an early literacy activity packet. No raffle tickets for this age group, but stickers and an age-appropriate “goody bag” are take-home treats.
Readers in grades K-8 can earn raffle tickets for prizes by reading. Each 20 minutes of reading counts as one raffle ticket. Each raffle ticket can be entered in one of our eight prize buckets for a chance to win that prize, or, if you don’t feel like waiting, choose a prize from the treasure chest with one raffle ticket! Students in grades 5–8 are also eligible for special prizes that include after-hours events at the library for you and five friends. Attendance at any library program also earns a raffle ticket. Prizes are on display in the Kidspace, and all prize winners will be drawn by August 12th. Winners must be registered. Register for summer reading in the Marabella Kidspace.
Teens and adults can participate in summer reading by earning raffle tickets for signing up, playing BINGO, and more! Stop at the desk on the second floor for more information about teen and adult summer reading.
Prizes for all ages are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Library. The SB Library Foundation generously sponsored our summer reading bags. Please visit our website for more information about summer reading, summer programs, and pop-up events in August. Keep an eye on our social media pages, too. Join us for an adventure-filled summer!
