👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Protect Your Kids This Summer: Online Safety Starts at Home

With school out and screen time up, now is the time to talk with your kids about staying safe online. As technology and social media continue to evolve, so do the risks — from sextortion and inappropriate gaming content to interacting with strangers.

Key Safety Tips for Parents:

• Keep communication open. Encourage your child to speak up if something online makes them uncomfortable.

• Set clear rules. Use parental controls, limit screen time, and discuss appropriate content and behavior.

• Lead by example. Model responsible internet habits and make online safety a family priority.

• Talk about privacy. Make sure your child knows never to share personal information (like phone numbers or addresses) online.

• Teach stranger safety. Emphasize that not everyone online is who they claim to be. Avoid chatting with unknown users and never accept gifts or meetups.

Be Aware of Sextortion:
This growing crime involves someone threatening to share private images or conversations unless money or more content is sent. Look for warning signs like:

• Sudden secrecy or emotional withdrawal

• Switching screens quickly or hiding devices

• Unexplained money transfers or new expensive items

Let your child know they can talk to you — without fear or judgment. If someone asks for or shares sexual messages or images involving minors, report it immediately to law enforcement.

Stay Involved, Stay Informed.
Know the games your kids play, who they’re interacting with, and what trends are emerging. Your involvement is one of their greatest protections.

As we enter the month of June, we want to take a moment to thank our community for your continued partnership and support. With summer officially upon us, we anticipate an increase in outdoor activities, travel, and community events. Our officers remain committed to ensuring the safety of our neighborhoods and are proactively engaging in patrols and outreach efforts to support a safe and enjoyable season for all.

We encourage residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity. Your awareness and involvement play a vital role in crime prevention. As always, we are here to serve with professionalism, respect, and dedication.

We look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming events, and we remain grateful for the strong bond we share with the McLean community.

The McLean District Station is aware that a nationwide scam is occurring where the offender is spoofing McLean District Station’s phone number and representing themselves as a law enforcement officer. Please know that the Fairfax County Police Department will NEVER contact you directly and ask for money or payment of any kind.

If you receive a phone call similar to this, hang up immediately! If you sent money to the offender, please complete a FICOR report using the link below: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/Police_FiCOR/

Vehicle Theft Prevention

As more people hit the road in June, remember that unlocked cars are a prime target for opportunistic thieves.
Prevent break-ins by:

• Remove all valuables (especially laptops, wallets and bags).

• ALWAYS Lock all doors and windows.

• Parking in well-lit areas and close to building entrances when possible.

If you "see something, say something." Call the non-emergency number (703-691-2131) to report suspicious activity in parking lots or neighborhoods.

No one anticipates being involved in a car crash. If it happens to you, will you know what to do? Follow the steps listed above to help simplify the process.

Below are a list of crimes/events that CAN be reported online, if they happened within the confines of Fairfax County:

• Bicycle Theft
• Destruction of Private Property/Vandalism
• Larceny/Theft from Motor Vehicle or Parts
• Larceny/Theft Under $10,000
• Lost Property
• Suspicious Person/Vehicle
• Solicitor Violations
• Telephone Harassment/Threats
• Trespassing
• Unoccupied Hit and Run Accidents

NOTE: All case statuses are classified as INACTIVE, meaning it is not assigned to a detective or officer for further investigation.

Dial 9-8-8 for 24-hour Behavioral Healthcare and Support

9-8-8 is a three-digit number that routes callers to the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. When an individual calls or texts 9-8-8, they are connected to trained counselors who will listen, provide support, and connect them with necessary resources. 9-8-8 is active in Fairfax County and across the United States.

What You Need to Know

• Dialing or texting 9-8-8 will connect you to free behavioral health care and support 24 hours a day. Chat (English only) is also available through the Lifeline’s website at: 988lifeline.org/chat.

• 9-8-8 is a direct connection to support for anyone experiencing behavioral health-related distress as well as those concerned about a loved one.

• Callers may be experiencing:

  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Mental health or substance use concerns or
  • Any other kind of emotional distress.

• The Commonwealth of Virginia continues to build capacity and infrastructure:

  • To support 9-8-8 and the Commonwealth’s comprehensive crisis support system commonly referred to as Marcus Alert.
  • To enhance community-based crisis services.

• Fairfax County continues to respond to community needs and expand crisis services. At the Merrifield Crisis Response Center (open 24/7) at the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health, operated by the Community Services Board (CSB), walk-in emergency behavioral health assistance is available day and night, 365 days a year.
