A Message from the Commanders

Dear West Springfield Community Members,

As your Commander, I am pleased to share the latest updates on our district’s ongoing public safety initiatives. In the past quarter, we have made meaningful progress in several key areas: crime prevention, youth engagement, traffic safety, and emergency preparedness.

Crime Prevention Efforts

Our officers have been focused on preventing property crimes, particularly residential burglaries, vehicle break-ins, and parts thefts. Through targeted patrols and collaboration with neighborhood watch programs, we’ve seen a reduction in these incidents. We continue to encourage community members to take simple precautions like locking doors, securing valuables, and reporting suspicious behavior to assist us in maintaining this downward trend.

Youth Engagement

In addition to crime prevention, our team has been hard at work fostering positive relationships with the youth in our community. We’ve expanded our outreach efforts by hosting internet safety classes, scout nights, Kids in Today's Society (KITS) classes, and community events. These initiatives have created stronger bonds between officers and the community and helped young people understand their role in promoting community safety.

Traffic Safety Initiatives

Traffic safety remains a top priority for our district. Over the past quarter, our officers have made over 3000 contacts, including summonses and warnings, as part of our ongoing effort to improve road safety. By increasing patrols in high-risk areas and conducting focused enforcement on speeding and distracted driving, we have been working diligently to reduce traffic-related incidents. We urge all drivers to stay vigilant, obey speed limits, and avoid distractions to ensure our roads remain safe for everyone.

Emergency Preparedness

With autumn upon us, we are placing a renewed emphasis on emergency preparedness. We encourage families to review and update their emergency plans and ensure they are well-equipped for severe weather and other emergencies. As part of this effort, we will be sharing valuable resources from Ready.gov, focusing on the importance of creating a family emergency plan and assembling an emergency kit. For detailed guidance, we recommend exploring, "Build A Kit" and “Make A Plan” sections to help keep your household safe and ready for any situation.

Looking Forward

We want to thank our officers for their unwavering commitment to the community and for always going the extra mile. We also deeply appreciate the continued support of residents like you. As we look ahead, our focus remains on fostering a safe, connected, and resilient West Springfield. We’re excited to continue working with each of you to build on the progress we’ve made.

Fairfax County Police Department Releases Q1 2024 Crime Report

With the recent release of the First Quarter Crime Report by the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA), spotlighting the nation’s 70 largest police departments across key crime categories, including Homicide, Rape, Robbery, and Aggravated Assault, we proudly affirm that Fairfax County retains its distinction as the safest jurisdiction of its size. In the MCCA’s evaluation of violent crime ratings among all participating agencies, Fairfax County stands as an example of safety and security for its residents.

Want to be more engaged about what is going on in your district? Join us at our in-person Community Advisory Committee (CAC) Meetings. CACs enhance communication between residents and the FCPD and offer residents a chance to dialogue with members of their local police districts. Members are kept informed about significant safety matters in their neighborhoods and are encouraged to bring any issues or questions to the attention of local police commanders.
