A Message from Ms. Consolla

Believe it or not, we are halfway through the first quarter. I've asked teachers to prepare interim progress reports for any students that have needed additional support in academic and/or citizenship & work skills because they are not meeting expectations at this time. Teachers will share how they've been supporting students. They will be sent via email to the enrolling parent no later than Wednesday this week. I invite you to reach out with any questions. All classroom teachers will be scheduling parent-teacher conferences in the next few weeks. This is a great opportunity to review the beginning of the year assessments that we're finishing up and to connect about ways to support your child.

Arriving on time to school ensures your child has time to unpack, settle in and begin the day on a positive note. We recognize that situations might come up that result in arriving after 8:55am. When that happens, quickly walk your child into the office. Do not drop them off at the curb. Walking them in takes a minute and ensures that there is an adult-to-adult hand-off.

Thank you for your partnership in your child's education at Fort Hunt.

Your voice matters, and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid wants to hear from you! At FCPS, parents are partners, working with us to set our students up for long-term success at school and in life.

A series of Community Conversations will be held across the school division. You are invited to share your thoughts with Dr. Reid and ask her questions.

Here is information about the other dates and locations:

💕Windows, Mirrors & Doors

Windows represent the opportunities we have to learn about different cultures, abilities and backgrounds. Mirrors represent the ability to see yourself and feel valued. It gives the viewer a sense of belonging which can help validate their own experiences and identities. Doors represent the opportunity to enter and engage with another culture for a moment in time. We are following the FCPS Heritage Months calendar.

Coming up in October: LBGTQIA+ History Month & Disability Awareness Month. If you connect with these identities, please consider sharing any family photos, books and artifacts. They will be on display in our showcase.

Astrid Mendez, our new Family Liaison, will work with you to create any descriptive labels you’d like to add. She can be reached at almendez@fcps.edu

💻Advanced Academics Overview: Information Meeting Follow-up

This past Tuesday, we held an information meeting to share about Advanced Academic services across grades K-12 in FCPS. We shared the levels of service that are available at Fort Hunt. While we did not record the presentation, we are sharing the slides.

Our next information meeting will focus specifically on the referral process for Full-time services. That meeting will be on Tuesday, November 17 at 6:30pm on Zoom.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to Ms. Preshion Lynch, our Advanced Academics Resource Teacher (AART) at pmlynch@fcps.edu.

🚗Traffic Safety Near Our School

We understand that families may need to drive their children to school from time to time. If you need to, please familiarize yourself with our school’s kiss-and-ride procedures for the safety of all children and staff.

Please drop off or pick up your students in the designated areas. At Fort Hunt, this means using our Kiss & Ride line. It moves quickly and is the safest option for your child. Students should not be dropped off or picked up in other areas around the school or in nearby neighborhoods. Please also avoid parking along Linton, especially at driveways and corners. This can increase the number of students walking through busy intersections and create traffic hazards for other drivers and families trying to get to school.

NEVER CROSS BETWEEN CARS: Take the extra minute and head over to the crosswalk with the crossing guard.

RIGHT TURNS ONLY: All cars entering Kiss & Ride from Linton and leaving the school driveway need to make a right turn only back onto Linton. This is the safest and most efficient way.

Please follow all signs and directions posted at our school, on public roads, or provided by school staff or crossing guards, and avoid making U-turns. Most of all, always — ALWAYS — drive slowly near our school. The safety of all our students is one of our top priorities!!

The Fairfax County Police Department has additional safety tips for families, including ways to keep walkers safe and what to do about scooters, bicycles, and e-scooters.

🏫Review and Sign the SR&R by this Wednesday, September 30

Last week, we had grade level meetings to share expectations around behavior and safety. You can see the poster that we built together for each grade level. They hang outside their classrooms.

The FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) booklet explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. This year’s SR&R includes new Universal Grade Matrices, which are at-a-glance charts that make it easier for families to see behavior expectations and school responses for grades K-3, 4-8, and 9-12.

Families, please review the SR&R and discuss these expectations with your child. Be sure to sign the SR&R acknowledgement form by Wednesday, September 30, either by logging into SIS ParentVUE or signing and returning the Signature Sheet to your child’s school.

Learn more by watching a short video about the SR&R (available in English and Spanish) or visiting the SR&R webpage.

Cellphones and Personal Devices

Students may only use a personal device if it is required as part of a necessary accommodation in the students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. A principal or the principal’s designee may approve a limited, course-specific exception for students enrolled in a specialized class when the curriculum requires a technology tool or software that isn’t available on a standard FCPS-issued device. Learn more about the student device requirement.

Updates to Technology in School

The Virginia legislature has passed a law updating what personal electronics are permitted in school.  Starting this year, students must turn off and place in backpacks all personal electronics, including cell phones, smart watches, laptops, and wireless headphones.  Students may not wear these items during the school day in the building.

Birthdays at Fort Hunt

Birthdays are a special day for children. Our PTA recognizes every child at the monthly Birthday Books & Cupcakes. Each child picks out a book to take home and a cupcake to enjoy at lunch.

Do not sent in any cupcakes, treats or items to pass out. Thank you!

Toys, Fidgets, Stuffies... Stay at Home

If your child has an accommodation for the use of a fidget in their IEP or 504 plan, we will provide a fidget for them. All toys, fidgets, stuffed animals, squishies, pop-its etc., need to stay at home even if they're small. Thank you for ensuring your student complies with this.

We are PET-Free on Our Campus

As a reminder, all FCPS campuses, including Fort Hunt, do not allow pets at any time or day of the week. This includes drop-off and afterschool pick-up. It's fine to wait up on the sidewalk on Linton Lane with your pet. This rule is in place to ensure all students feel safe and to keep our grounds clean. Thank you!
