Roadrunner Roundup
Dear Roadrunner Families,
It was wonderful to see so many of you at our Back to School Night on Wednesday! The halls were buzzing with excitement, and we truly appreciated the opportunity for our teachers to connect with all of our families. We hope you enjoyed meeting your child's teachers and getting a glimpse into the exciting year ahead.
Wednesday also marked our first PTA meeting of the school year. Thank you to everyone who attended and showed their commitment to our school community. We're looking forward to a fantastic year of collaboration and partnership!
Looking ahead, we hope to see many of you at the Asha Jyothi 5K in Fairfax Corner this Sunday! We will be there, so please join us to run or walk for a great cause. It will be a fun way to get active and connect with our school community.
Sincerely,
Christie Yarn, Principal Alison Butler, Assistant Principal

📚 Discovering Character in Language Arts 📚
Benchmark Unit 2 in Language Arts is about characters who are faced with difficult choices. Sixth grade students will learn about characters who are changed and inspired by others.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: Have you ever disagreed with a friend? How did you see things differently?
- Activity: Have your child write a diary entry from the perspective of a book character.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

Walk/Bike to School Day - October 8
This is a fun, before-school event to encourage students and families to choose a more environmentally friendly way to get to school. Our Get2Green Eco-Ambassadors and parent volunteers will be at school handing out special bracelets to everyone as they arrive.
The goal is to raise awareness about the benefits of walking and biking for our health and for the planet. All students will get a bracelet, no matter how they get to school that day.
Accessing Family Life Education Materials (FLE)
4th-6th grade classes will be participating in Family Life Education (FLE) lessons beginning in December. (Be on the look out for communication from teachers regarding this in the coming weeks).
For your convenience, the lessons and materials are available for families to view at your own pace on the All Parents/Guardians: Little Run Elementary School Schoology Course. Detailed instructions on how to access these materials can be found liked here.
Additionally, the Woodson Pyramid will be hosting a Parent Preview Night for FLE on Thursday, October 23 from 5:30-6:00PM. This event provides an opportunity to ask questions and receive assistance in accessing the materials virtually.

Ensuring Student Safety: Register for Volunteer FCPS
Click Here to Sign Up to Volunteer at Little Run!
FCPS has launched a new system to help ensure student safety.
- If you plan to volunteer more than twice this school year, or chaperone a field trip (even just once), you must register in Volunteer FCPS.
- The process involves multiple steps and cannot be completed last minute, so we encourage you to start early.
Volunteer Levels
-
Level 1: Infrequent volunteers (monthly or less frequent) who are always supervised do not need a criminal background check. However, they do need a sex offender registry check, which is performed by signing in at the school's visitor kiosk.
-
Level 2: Frequent, ongoing, or regular volunteers (daily, weekly, bi-weekly) who are also always supervised are subject to the same requirements as Level 1—no criminal background check, but a sex offender registry check via the kiosk is mandatory.
-
Level 3: Volunteers with direct, unsupervised interaction with students must complete a criminal background check, including fingerprinting and child abuse and neglect checks. This applies to roles like mentors, tutors, or field trip chaperones who are alone with students (not accompanied by an FCPS staff member) at any time during the activity.
How to Register as a Volunteer
- Review FCPS Volunteer Guidelines – All volunteers must read the FCPS Volunteer Protocols before getting started.
- Register in the FCPS Volunteer Portal
- Search for Little Run Elementary
