Dear Justice Community,
As we move through May and approach the final stretch of the school year, I want to take a moment to celebrate and recognize the tremendous effort and commitment demonstrated by our students, staff, and families over the past few weeks.
We’ve seen outstanding attendance during both the IB and SOL exams, and I couldn’t be more proud of how seriously our students have taken these important assessments. Their focus and perseverance reflect the high standards we set at Justice High School—and the strong support system behind them.
To our families: thank you. Your encouragement, flexibility, and partnership have played a vital role in helping our students show up prepared and confident. These moments of academic challenge are not just about test scores—they’re about resilience, responsibility, and growth.
As we head into the final weeks of school, I want to emphasize the importance of continuing to attend each day. These last days are filled with meaningful instruction, final projects, and opportunities for connection that set the tone for both a strong finish and a successful transition into next year.
I remain incredibly proud of this community and all we’ve accomplished together this year. Thank you for your continued trust and engagement.

Late buses continue to run Monday-Thursday until May 22nd, departing at 5:00 PM.
From 3:00-5:00 PM, students can get support in: Attendance Recovery, IB/SOL Prep, Grade Recovery, etc.

All Fairfax County middle and high school students can get a Student Bus Pass SmarTrip card to ride the Fairfax Connector and Fairfax CUE buses for free! With the pass, fares are free from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, all year. Learn more about the Student Pass. Complete the application and return it to our front office.
Our students can ride Metrobus for free, in addition to the Fairfax Connector and City of Fairfax CUE. Visit the Fairfax County website for details and approved Metrobus routes. Complete the application and return it to our front office.

 Students danced the night away at our 2025 prom put on by the Class of 2026 for our seniors.
 A Successful Year Long Journey!
A big congratulations for Mr. Gaydon’s 8th period STEM Advanced Engineering class for their participation at the DC Grand Prix Electric Vehicle Competition on Saturday, May 3rd! As the first FCPS school ever to compete in this prestigious event, our students truly made history.
Their dedication and innovation were recognized with the coveted ProjoTech Award, a testament to their engineering excellence and teamwork. Special congratulations go to Team Captain Senior Daniel Armas for his outstanding leadership and to the fearless driver Altaf Jalali.
We’d also like to thank Art Teacher Mr. Fitzgerald, along with students Josue Garcia — a participant in the Auto-Collision program at Edison Academy — and Anthony Ceto, for their outstanding work painting the car’s body. Their craftsmanship truly turned heads on the track!
 Justice Students Get Hands-On Look at Healthcare Careers at INOVA
On April 4th, Justice High School students took part in the Dream Big INOVA Hospital field trip through the Public Health Youth Ambassador Program. During the visit, students explored state-of-the-art medical facilities, learned about a wide range of healthcare careers, and discovered support programs designed to help them jumpstart those careers after graduation.
This exciting opportunity, featured in Annandale Today, inspired many students — and for two Justice seniors, it sparked immediate action. Karen Orozco and Estefany Cantarero, both part of the Health and Medical Sciences Academies, applied to become clinical technicians at INOVA and are now moving through the hiring process. Once employed, INOVA provides $5,000 annually to support employees in continuing their education in the healthcare field of their choice.
The Wolf Shack is Open!
The Wolf Shack is our PTSA-sponsored in-school food and resource pantry, providing free essential resources for all students. The Wolf Shack is open from 3-5pm on late bus days (Wednesdays & Thursdays) in Room B27 between the Black Box Theater and the Little Theater.

☀️ Summer Internship Program for Students
FCPS is launching a Summer Internship Program. This six-week, paid, in-person opportunity is for FCPS high school students or recent alumni enrolled in post-secondary education. This program is designed to provide valuable hands-on work experience, professional development, and project-based learning across various FCPS departments.
Interns will support professional staff in their selected department with projects and participate in weekly professional development workshops on topics such as personal finance, communication skills, resume writing, and networking. Interns will shadow staff completing mission-critical projects that prepare the division for the upcoming school year.

Phase 2 Community Boundary Review Meetings
Families, staff, and community members will soon be able to explore and visualize potential boundary scenarios using a customized Boundary Explorer Tool. The tool will be accessible from the FCPS website. You are also invited to participate in another series of community meetings in order to review and reflect on the initial draft scenarios before the start of summer break:

- Friday, May 23, 7-8:30 p.m., Lewis High School
- Wednesday, May 28, 7-8:30 p.m., Annandale High School
- Thursday, May 29, 6:30-8 p.m., Whitman Middle School

- Friday, June 6, 6:30–8 p.m., Glasgow Middle School
Each meeting will be hybrid, meaning that you may attend in person or via Zoom. Childcare for in-person participants and language interpretation/translation for all participants will be available as needed. Registration links will be shared soon. Another round of community meetings will be held in the fall.

Nominations Open for the Bussey Memorial Equity Award
Nominations are now open for the 2025 Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award. The Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC) sponsors this award to honor the legacy of Dr. Bussey, a founding member of the MSAOC and a longtime advocate for students and families.
This award recognizes an employee, student, or community member who has demonstrated significant and impactful efforts to improve the educational experiences and outcomes of students from groups who are marginalized or underserved.
Any staff, student, or community member can nominate an individual for the award. All nomination materials must be submitted by Monday, May 19. Visit the Dr. Lawrence Bussey Memorial Equity Award webpage to access the nomination information form.
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
People with ancestral roots in Asia and the islands of the Pacific have been integral to the story of America. In 1992, May was designated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to celebrate their heritage and contributions. What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse
FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.
What can families do?
- Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
- Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
- Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage.
- Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
- Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Justice High School is a proud partner with Food for Neighbors, a local organization who helps to feed our students outside of school hours.
The Red Bag Program is filled five times a year and provided to needy families. Food for Neighbors will drop off an empty Red Bag with a list of items. You can support by purchasing some food items that is provided on the list. Leave the Red Bag outside your door and Food for Neighbors will come pick it up.

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations
Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!
Starting Monday, May 19, students who have not provided proof of immunization may not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization status and submit updated immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE.
Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or view other Immunization Resources. Be wise and immunize!
Varsity Tutors Provides On-Demand Support at No Cost
FCPS is partnering with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors’ services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests. Hazel Health: Virtual Therapy for High School Students
Teletherapy services are available for all FCPS high school students at no cost. Sessions can be scheduled Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Hazel Health’s highly qualified therapists specialize in working with teens. Learn more on FCPS’ teletherapy webpage.
Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health
Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:
- Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
- Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
- Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
- Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
- A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
- Alcohol or drug use.
- Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
- Thoughts of harming themselves or others.
If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact your child's school counselor to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness.
