Haycock Hello 2.24.25

red

Dear Haycock Families,

Although it's only February, we are beginning our planning and staffing for the 2025-26 school year.  If your child will not be returning to Haycock next year, please complete this form. 👉 Submit the Form Here. Parents of our 6th graders moving on to Longfellow do not need to complete the form. We hope all our students will be returning!

We will be sending out Attendance Reports for Parents at the end of this week.  Every parent/guardian will receive a report for each of their children. This is another way we can communicate with you and work together so that every student maintains good attendance.

The Virginia Department of Education will label any student who misses 10% or more of school days in a year (so 18 days or more) as chronically absent. We are trying to avoid having any of our students identified as such.  The VDOE does not consider if absences are excused, unexcused, for family trips, or for illness, they simply look at the total number of absences for each student.  Most importantly, attending school regularly makes a huge difference for students.

We hope to see you tonight at the virtual PTA meeting at 7:00.  See below for the link to join us.

Join us next Sunday, March 2 for a community clean up of the Haycock/Longfellow Park from 2:00 to 4:00.  See more information below.

With appreciation for your partnership,

Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu

Heather Boyd, AP   HABoyd@fcps.edu

Krystal Styles, AP   krstyles@fcps.edu

🌳Community Clean Up Effort

Haycock/Longfellow Park

Sunday, March 2 from 2-4

Trees do an excellent job storing carbon and cooling the earth. Join in a community effort to save trees from invasive vines in the Haycock Longfellow Park (which is behind the Haycock playground) on Sunday, March 2 from 2-4 pm. We’ll be led by trained Tree Rescuers. No prior experience or great physical strength necessary. Supplies provided, but if you have garden tools and gloves, please bring them. All ages are welcome although elementary school students must be accompanied by an adult. Directions to the meet-up location are in the SignUpGenius. Please sign up here

🐻 It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us prepare and ensure we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Please see this Kindergarten Registration Information, make an appointment with our registrar, Yujin Choi at ychoi2@fcps.edu.

Put Monday, March 17 at 2:45 p.m. on your calendar for Kindergarten Orientation.  This event is for parents and incoming students.

🪧New Haycock Electronic Marquee Update

Since early fall, we have been working with FCPS Design and Construction to obtain bids for the installation and electrical work needed to install our new electronic marquee. The PTA raised the funds for both the sign and the installation last year through the Silent Auction.  We are patiently waiting for those bids to come back so that contractors can begin the installation.  The timeline we've been given on receiving the bids back is mid-March.

🏫Student Experience Survey- Grades 3-6

Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 24. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 24, and Friday, March 7. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day.

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

📆February is Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. We are celebrating  Black History month in many different ways at Haycock, including having former Haycock and now Longfellow students join us to share their poetry. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS. Learn more about Black History month.

❤️Kids Heart Challenge

Thank you all so much for the donations to the Kids Heart Challenge!  Haycock raised $13,343.29 for the American Heart Association to help people with sick hearts.  We had 204 students register, and 15 of them completed Finn’s Mission to learn hands-only CPR.  Our top fundraisers were Jackson B. in 1st grade and Jameson D. in 5th grade.  Your donations also earned Haycock’s physical education department $850 in gift certificates.  These gift certificates will go towards the physical education program equipment needs.   Larger prizes and gift sets that have been earned by our students for their donations will be distributed in a few weeks after I have received and sorted them here at Haycock.  Thank you again!   Nisha Hecht, Physical Education Teacher

🩺VDH Immunization Packets for Rising 7th Graders

As required by the Code of Virginia, parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend public school. All students entering seventh grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations:

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older.
  • Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older.
  • A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
  • After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parents/guardians sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with their child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. If your child does not have a health care provider, please visit the FCPS Immunizations Resourcepage to find out where to get an immunization.

Please review the Virginia Department of Health Information Packetfor more information on rising 7th grade immunization requirements.

📐 Breaking Down the Budget

Supporting Academic Growth and Algebra by Eighth Grade

The FCPS Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget invests in academic growth and excellence for each and every student, which is one of the priorities of the FCPS Strategic Plan

Since the 2023-24 school year, FCPS has seen a 9.5% increase in eighth graders taking Algebra I or more advanced math and a 6.8% increase in fifth graders in advanced math.

Studies show that students who complete algebra in middle school have more opportunities to take advanced math and science courses in high school. This can open up new academic paths for students! Watch a video that shows why eighth grade algebra matters.

Learn more about the FCPS FY 2026 Proposed Budget.

The FCPS CARES Program allows parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees who go above and beyond to help others and show they care about their students, colleagues, and the community. We invite you to submit a story below to acknowledge the great work of an FCPS employee or group of employees who should receive FCPS CARES recognition.
