1. Birthday Celebrations
Dear Parents and Guardians,
At Virginia Run Elementary School, the health and safety of our students are always our top priority. With this in mind, we would like to remind families of our policy regarding birthday celebrations in the classroom.
Due to dietary restrictions, food allergies, and other health-related concerns, we do not allow food treats to be shared with classmates for birthday celebrations. This policy ensures that all students can safely participate in classroom activities without the risk of exposure to allergens or other dietary concerns that may not be approved by their parents.
If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school, we encourage non-food items as an alternative. Examples of non-food items include stickers, pencils, small toys, bookmarks, or other simple treats that can be shared with classmates. These small gestures are a wonderful way to make your child feel celebrated while maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping us keep our classrooms safe and inclusive for every student. If you have any questions or need additional clarification, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Warm regards,
Dave Gerstner
Principal, Virginia Run Elementary School

2. Power of Words Assembly
Dear Families,
At Virginia Run, we strive to provide an educational environment where all feel welcomed, safe, and supported to learn. Part of our commitment is to provide our students with meaningful learning opportunities that allow them to continue to grow as ethical and global citizens. This year, we have planned some grade-level assemblies focused on the power of our words.
We had our first assembly on February 3. Our next one will be held on February 19 with our 3rd -6th grade students. During the assembly, we will review the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) rules and talk with students about knowing the power of words and how they can impact others. As for grade K-2 students, they will receive these lessons during their counseling visits with Mrs. DeKeuster and Mrs. Wyllie.
We look forward to an impactful assembly and lessons with our students to make Virginia Run Elementary a more welcoming and culturally responsive environment for all.
Sincerely,
Dave Gerstner, Principal
Manuel D. Gomez Portillo, Region 5 Educational Specialist

3. Outdoor Recess Reminder – Stay Warm and Ready!
As the temperatures continue to drop, we want to remind everyone that all Virginia Run students have recess outdoors every day unless there is extreme weather. Outdoor play is a vital part of our students’ daily routine, providing them with an opportunity to be active, enjoy fresh air, and recharge for the remainder of their school day.
To ensure your child is comfortable and ready to enjoy recess, please remember to send them to school dressed for the cold weather. This includes:
- Warm coats
- Gloves or mittens
- Hats
- Boots if they plan on playing on snow covered surfaces
- Other appropriate outdoor attire
Layering is always a good idea, and labeling items can help us reunite misplaced gear with its owner. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our students safe and ready for the colder months ahead. Stay warm!

6. Upcoming Student Experience Survey at Virginia Run ES
Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.
All students in grades 3-6, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 24. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 24, and Friday, March 7. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose.
We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.
7. Viking Shop
Our SCA run school store, the Viking Shop is open! Students can come between 9:00 - 9:10 AM every Tuesday (grades K-2), Wednesday (3rd & 4th) and Thursday (5th & 6th) to purchase pencils, notepads, erasers, croc charms or other goodies. All items are between .25 cents and $2.00. Cash only. Proceeds support the school SCA and help purchase school equipment, as needed.

9. Positivity Project at Virginia Run
This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Optimism. Optimism means that you expect the best from the future and work to achieve it.
Optimistic people have hope and confidence about the future. They believe good things will come and stay positive even when faced with challenges. They turn obstacles into steps toward their goals.
Optimism isn't just seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. It's about focusing on the good in any situation, staying open to opportunities, and managing emotions. Optimistic people make great leaders and can inspire others with their positive outlook and ability to find meaning in difficult times.
To practice and encourage the character strength of optimism at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish).
