1. Reminder: Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024
Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Brittany Wade bwade@fcps.edu no later than December 15, 2024.
The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually. Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.
Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement. Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Brittany Wade bwade@fcps.edu
Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.
For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.
2. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results Available
Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.
For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.
3. Westfield Pyramid Kindness T-Shirts
Westfield Pyramid Schools are committed to promoting kindness, empathy, and inclusion. Schools will celebrate Kindness Week in February and we invite all students and staff in the Westfield Pyramid to wear their “We Choose Kindness” shirts signifying a personal commitment to choosing kindness. We are offering short-sleeve shirts and hooded sweatshirts in black with white and pink ink. Why pink?
The color is based on an anti-bullying campaign started by Travis Price and David Shepherd, who took a stand for a fellow student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school.
Order forms are due by January 15th and items will be delivered to your child’s classroom by February 7. If you would like to purchase, please complete the form that was sent home in the Wednesday folder (OR order online by using the QR Code below or on the form) and return to Jenna DeKeuster (School Counselor) with checks made out to Virginia Run PTA. We will not be accepting any payment after January 15th.
4. Outdoor Recess Reminder – Stay Warm and Ready!
As the temperatures continue to drop, we want to remind everyone that all Virginia Run students have recess outdoors every day unless there is extreme weather. Outdoor play is a vital part of our students’ daily routine, providing them with an opportunity to be active, enjoy fresh air, and recharge for the remainder of their school day.
To ensure your child is comfortable and ready to enjoy recess, please remember to send them to school dressed for the cold weather. This includes:
- Warm coats
- Gloves or mittens
- Hats
- Other appropriate outdoor attire
Layering is always a good idea, and labeling items can help us reunite misplaced gear with its owner. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our students safe and ready for the colder months ahead. Stay warm!
Sincerely,Dave GerstnerPrincipal, Virginia Run Elementary School
Virginia Run’s grade 5 & 6 Chorus students perform their Winter Concert.
5. Viking Shop
Our SCA run school store, the Viking Shop is now open! Students can come between 9:00 - 9:10 AM every Tuesday (grades K-2), Wednesday (3rd & 4th) and Thursday (5th & 6th) to purchase pencils, notepads, erasers, croc charms or other goodies. All items are between .25 cents and $2.00. Cash only. Proceeds support the school SCA and help purchase school equipment, as needed.
6. Recognize Our VRES Staff Who Go Above and Beyond
The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story, so we can all acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees, specifically at Virginia Run!

7. Positivity Project at Virginia Run
This week, our school community will focus on the Other People Mindset of Supporting Others When They Struggle. This means when other people are struggling, we do our best to help them out.
Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical part of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply being there and sitting together in silence. Everyone faces tough days and needs support, and this support leads to a chain of prosocial behavior that makes us feel good about ourselves and our group.
To practice and encourage the Other People Mindset at home, please visit the Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families.
8. Get 2 Green Parent Volunteers Needed
Do you have a green thumb? Are you willing to work with students on our Get 2 Green team at Virginia Run? Ms. Berg and Ms. Roberts are looking for 3-4 parent volunteers who are interested in taking care of our Virginia Run Garden.
Please reach out to Ms. Berg. jmberg@fcps.edu, if you are interested.
9. Distribution of Literature and Fliers
To protect our children from becoming little advertisers and mail carriers, FCPS has clearly described the situation under which children may carry announcements home to parents. (Regulation 1367.1) Students may only carry fliers consistent with the mission of the school: education and the welfare of children. All nonprofit organizations are eligible to submit fliers in accordance with the guidelines below. Charitable solicitations, partisan political organizations, and commercial or profit-making enterprises are excluded with the exception of school-business partnerships and events. Students may not carry advertisements. Non-profit organizations such as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts may only use the backpack system at designated times during the year. The fliers must be representative of something appropriate to the children and not violate any rules of decency, political campaigning, or marketing. These designated times are set by the school principal.
At Virginia Run Elementary, the remaining three dates that Wednesday envelopes may be used for carrying announcements from non-profit organizations are:
January 8th
March 5th
May 8th
**All announcements/fliers must carry the following disclaimer:
These materials are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent, or this school.
All announcements/fliers must be approved by the administration in advance, allowing at least 3 days turn-around time. Upon receiving approval, the organization is responsible for supplying the copies to the school by the Monday preceding the designated envelope. PTA materials and announcements must also be approved in advance, but are not restricted to, the four dates listed. No materials carried by children may promote improper behavior or political opinion.
