Labor Day Holiday

Friday, August 30, and Monday, September 2, are Labor Day holidays for all FCPS employees and students. Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends. See the complete school year calendar.

Back to School Night & New Wing Open House

We are excited to host our annual Open House and Back To School Night at Justice High School on August 28, 2024 at 5:00 pm. Buses will be provided for all families so please see below for the bus schedule and times. 

Justice HS Open House will be from 5:00 pm - 6:15 pm to tour the new building. Door 1 Lobby will be open from 5:30pm - 6:10pm where you may buy Justice gear, buy Pack Passes (Athletics), sign-up to become a member of the PTSA, visit the Wolf Shack Food and Resource Panty in Room B-27, learn about Title I, gain an understanding about Family Life Education in grades 9-12, and meet our different school support personnel, including our parent liaisons and technology team. The Little Theatre will be open from 5:30pm-6:10pm where you can meet with school Counselors, Deans of Students, Systems Of Support Advisor(SOSA), College & Career Specialist, and the On-Time Graduation (OTG) Coordinator. You will also have an opportunity to meet the Principal, Dr. Sean Rolon in the Auditorium from 5:30pm-6pm. Lastly you will meet the Teachers: From 6:15 pm-8:30 pm, where families will be able to rotate through their student’s schedule and meet each of their teachers by period. Please see below for the bus schedule.

If you receive a message and you know that your child came to school, two things might have happened:

• The student was late to class, and when the teacher took attendance, was marked UNV.
• The student did not show up for that particular class (skipped class).

Starting next week, you will also be notified if your student is late to class. If you have any questions, feel free to call us at 703-824-3920.

Free Meals at Justice HS

Justice HS has qualified for the USDA Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) meal program for the 2024-2025 school year. CEP is a non-pricing meal service option for schools in low-income areas. CEP allows schools to serve breakfast and lunch at no cost to ALL students without collecting household applications for free and reduced-price meals.

CEP General Information

• CEP is a USDA program; eligibility is based on direct certification for free meals at individual FCPS schools.
• All students at CEP schools automatically receive no-cost breakfast and lunch every day of the school year (even if the student would not qualify for free meals). 
• If a student purchases an additional breakfast or additional meal, it will be at cost to the family. 

Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications, Additional Benefits, and Related Information

For families that may want to receive benefits (class fees) beyond meals that are income-based, the FCPS CEP Consent to Share Information for Other Programs will continue to be utilized and is included in the free and reduced-price meal application process. Parents are encouraged to complete and submit the CEP Consent to Share Form

What Is a School Board?

The Fairfax County School Board is responsible for running the public schools in Fairfax County. Twelve School Board members are elected by county voters every four years. 

A student representative serves on the board as a non-voting member. They are chosen by their peers each year.

The School Board makes general rules and sets guidelines to ensure Fairfax County Public Schools runs properly. They follow the laws of Virginia and the rules set by the Virginia Board of Education. 

Learning about your local School Board is important. Understanding their policies and initiatives can help you advocate for positive changes and ensure that the educational needs of all students are met. There are many ways to get involved.

Partners for Safe Teen Driving (PTSD)

Justice High School Auditorium - Driver’s Education

The state of Virginia requires students and their parents or legal guardians to attend ONE session of Partners for Safe Teen Driving in order to receive their Pink Card (DEC-8). The 90 minute session requires participants to be actively involved during the presentation. This is offered in conjunction with our 10^th grade driver education curriculum and is a requirement. All sessions are in person for the 2024-2025 school year at Justice HS in the Auditorium. Registration link, and schedule is below. It is also posted on your 1oth grade teacher’s SCHOOLOGY PAGE.

If you are a current 11th or 12th grade Justice HS student seeking to attend a PTSD session, please email Monica White at mwhite@fcps.edu  for information.

PSTD presentations are 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM

The meetings are a “hard” 6:30 PM start in the Auditorium for every PSTD event. Doors lock at 6:30 sharp and an entry after that will not be allowed. (State Law)

Please plan to arrive at 6 pm to avoid being locked out. Every student will NEED to have a legal guardian present with them If they are attending PSTD session.

Digital Resource Consent Form

Please be sure to fill out and sign the Digital Resource Consent Form. This form allows for students to use various digital resources that are used in many of our classes during the year. This document is signed using your ParentVUE credentials. For more information, click here and follow the directions to access the form.

Student Rights & Responsibilities

The Student Rights & Responsibilities (SR&R) handbook is located online in SISParentVUE.  Parents and guardians are responsible for acknowledging they have received and reviewed the SR&R and should be prompted to do so when they log into their SIS Parent Account. Students will be reviewing the SR&R during Advisory (2nd Period).

Schoology

Students and teachers will continue to use Schoology as their learning management system. Students will login using their student ID and FCPS network password. Parents who have a ParentVue account will have read-only access to view their child’s Schoology courses and will use their ParentVue username and password to login to Schoology. If you wish to access Schoology, but do not have a ParentVue account, please visit this site to register for a ParentVue account. Students will be able to access their courses via Schoology by the first day of school.

📵 Phones Down, Engagement Up: FCPS Cell Phone Policy and Storage Pilot

Keeping cell phones off during the school day helps students focus and learn. It also boosts positive social behavior. Review FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level with your child and help keep our classrooms free of distractions! If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call the Justice HS Main Office at 703-824-3900.

At the May 9, 2024 School Board meeting, the School Board directed the superintendent to develop a pilot program for cell phone storage at FCPS. Starting with the 2024-25 school year, select high schools will be cell phone-free during all instructional times by using cell phone storage units in each classroom. Students at these schools will begin using the storage units on Tuesday, September 3. 

Justice High School is participating in this pilot as a storage school and we will be following the guidelines above closely. We appreciate you reinforcing with your child why you support the FCPS Cell Phone Policy. Find more information and additional resources on our cell phone storage webpage.

Opt-Out Annual Notice

Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights

Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents and caregivers to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.

In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available: a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents/caregivers with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice, because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Athletic Ticket Price Changes

Did you know that FCPS athletic event ticket prices haven't changed in over 25 years? Despite overwhelming inflation during that time period.

A note from the FCPS Office of Student Activities and Athletics - Effective with the start of the 2024-2025 school year all FCPS schools will have consistent regular season, district tournament and region tournament entry fees for general admission.

Adults (18 and over) will be $7.

FCPS students will be $5.

Schools will continue to offer free admission to senior citizens and children under 6. The VHSL sets ticket prices for VHSL State Competitions.

Schools are not allocated funding for uniforms and consumable supplies and ticket revenue is the primary funding source for those items. 

Justice High School will continue to offer the LOW COST option of purchasing a Pack Pass. A pack pass is good for entry into every athletic event held on campus for the entire 2024-2025 school year.

Required Immunizations

All students are required to be immunized against certain communicable diseases to attend school in the state of Virginia. It is important for all students to receive the required immunizations. 

Please talk with your family health care provider about whether or not your children are up to date on their vaccines before the new school year begins. Submit updated immunization records to your school as soon as possible. Appointments are required for most vaccination clinics. Don’t wait until the last minute when you might not be able to find an appointment. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a schedule of clinics or schedule with your family’s health care provider

12th Grade College and Career Night

Parents of Seniors! Please join us at our annual Senior Parent Night from 6:30-8:30 pm on Thursday, September 12 in the Little Theatre. We will be discussing graduation requirements, college application timelines, senior packet, requesting official transcripts and other items needed, as well as offering two breakout sessions.

Justice HS Parent University (ParentU) The road to success is always under construction. Justice High School invites you to our five-part Parent University series that will strengthen our family-school partnership. We want to increase student engagement by sharing the responsibility to promote student success. Our first Parent University session, which will focus on building a strong foundation, will be held on Wednesday, September 18th from 5-8:30 pm. We will share more information as we get closer.

Transportation Patience and Safety

Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your children’s buses. 

If your student’s bus is delayed, you may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Please contact the Transportation Office at 703-446-2050 with any additional questions. For concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact Safety and Security at 571-423-2000. 

Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE to make sure you receive email messages about bus delays.

Overdose Awareness and Understanding the Dangers of Opioids

In Northern Virginia, consistent with national and state trends, the opioid epidemic continues to impact communities, including young adults and school-age children. Opioids are a class of drugs used to treat pain and can include prescription medication and illegal drugs. 

Tragically, their misuse can lead to devastating outcomes. Fentanyl is an extremely fatal and especially powerful opioid, even in small doses. Most fatal overdoses in Fairfax County in recent years have involved fentanyl.

August 31 is Overdose Awareness Day. There are three things you can do now to support student wellness and increase understanding of the dangers of opioids and fentanyl:

• Talk with children and loved ones in your life about the dangers of drug use, especially opioids. For more information about substance use among youth, tips on how to recognize and prevent substance abuse, and available support services, please watch this webinar.
• Safely store and dispose of medications, including prescription pain medications, to prevent drug misuse.
• Sign up for a Virtual REVIVE! training class to learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of opioid overdose and administer naloxone nasal spray to reverse an opioid overdose.

📞 Family Information Phone Lines

FCPS phone lines are available in nine different languages. An FCPS employee will respond to your call in your preferred language within 24 hours, Monday through Friday. Call the phone line with any question about your child’s education or FCPS and someone will help connect you to resources or arrange for you to speak to the appropriate school employee. Varsity Tutors Provides On-Demand Support at No Cost

FCPS is partnering with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors’ services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests. No-Cost Virtual Therapy for High School Students

Virtual therapy sessions are available at no cost to FCPS high school students to provide a safe space to address concerns such as:

• Mood/behavior changes, motivation, grief/loss.
• Anxiety, worry, fears.
• Social skills, bullying, peer and family relationships.
• Academic stress.

In order for students to participate, caregivers must give permission for FCPS to share basic demographic information with Hazel Health in ParentVUE. They must also provide consent for their student to access therapy services. 

Students may then be referred by a guardian or designated school staff member. Refer your child by calling 571-749-2940 or contacting an FCPS school counselor, social worker, psychologist, or director of Student Services.

Student Insurance

During the school day, a student may have an accident that results in injury. There is a common misconception that FCPS (Fairfax County Public Schools) is financially responsible for medical bills resulting from such injuries. However, this is not the case.

Students who participate in sports are required to have health insurance. FCPS does not provide medical insurance for students, but parents can purchase low-cost Voluntary Student Insurance through K & K Insurance Group.

This student accident insurance program offers an affordable way for parents to cover medical or dental expenses resulting from their child's accident. For those who already have medical or dental insurance, this additional coverage can help with deductibles, limitations, and exclusions. For those without medical insurance, these accident policies provide primary coverage.

🔍 Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.

Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

FCPS tiene herramientas para ayudar a los padres a saber más sobre la actividad de sus hijos en cualquier dispositivo de FCPS.
