Annandale Community Insider - June 21

b

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

Greetings from Bayport, New York, where I am with the families of my wife’s brother and sister. We are enjoying swimming, playing spikeball, and reminiscing on past years. It's incredible how time flies.

At the end of June, I attended and presented at the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP) Annual Conference in Richmond. Secondary administrators from across Virginia came together to learn about ways we can systematize support for students’ needs and support teachers’ ongoing professional learning. One highlight of the conference was Annandale’s Orchestra Teacher, Annie Ray, who received a standing ovation for her keynote address on the impact students’ connection with school has on their overall wellbeing and success. She emphasized that students are best served in schools that not only offer many opportunities for students to participate in co- and extracurricular activities, but also provide targeted academic, behavior, and wellness interventions to ensure students can thrive - exactly what we do at Annandale. Check out Annie’s speech here!

In addition to the learning we have done outside of FCPS, our Administrative team spent this week learning from FCPS curriculum offices, and hearing from FCPS leaders. At our Leadership Kickoff, keynote speaker Brad Snyder, retired US Navy EOD Officer and US Paralympic Athlete shared his story of earning a Paralympic Gold Medal in Swimming after losing his vision while he was serving in Afghanistan. His message that we all function better as a part of a community, rather than as individuals, was incredibly inspiring. He went on to say that the right mix of leadership, passion, and collective effort makes magic possible. This resonated with me because, once again, this is exactly what we do at Annandale: work together to ensure we are a great school for all students.

I would like to invite you to learn about the magic that is happening at Annandale High School by joining me at Chick-fil-A Annandale on Thursday, August 1, for a Meet & Greet from 11:30am to 1:00pm. Whether you're a student, parent, or just curious about the upcoming school year, I'd love to chat and answer any questions you might have. No questions? No problem! Come by anyway and say hello. This is one of several community events we will be hosting as we prepare to welcome students back to school in August. Stay tuned for more information. Looking forward to seeing you there!

As always, please reach out with questions and Go Atoms!

Shawn DeRose, Principal
