Atoms Athletics

It was a great year in Atoms Athletics! Check out each of our season recaps below!

Fall Season

Our Cheerleading teams, as always, worked hard to shine each Friday night on our football sidelines. Outside of sideline cheer, this team came together to have an outstanding performance at the district cheer competition, unfortunately they came up short of qualifying for the Occoquan Region competition. The Atoms will look to start back up in the coming weeks as they prepare for the fall competition season and replace 12 graduating seniors.

Our Boys and Girls Cross Country teams had large teams and competitive seasons with many personal best times being set by a majority of the team members. The boys team had several impressive performances and continue to get better as several runners including Connor Uzokoff, Jakob McElveen, Andrew Banks, Charlie McGinity, and Nathaniel Dosen return to the program and look to take it to the next level. The girls team set personal best times throughout the season and look to make their presence known in 2024. The team loses several seniors including Keira Dalrymple, Melanie Lam, and Alison Coria Tarazona who have helped guide the program back since COVID. Be on the lookout for these two teams this fall!

Our Football program ushered in a new era as Chris Bagot took over the whistle for the Atoms in 2023. The freshman and JV teams played hard and improved every game. A lot of the football players from those teams are already in the weight room preparing for the 2024 season where many of them will see varsity action.  The varsity team played hard all season but injuries across the board doomed the Atoms. The Atoms came out strong in the opening game vs Marshall narrowly missing the victory to start Coach Bagot’s era off with a win. The Atoms finally got that first W in week four shutting out rival Falls Church 19-0 to win the Beltway Bowl trophy for the third year. Homecoming followed with a near capacity crowd and a close game before All district quarterback Lukas Wuhrer was lost for the season due to injury. The Atoms rallied around their injured teammate and played hard every game, giving their opponents all they could handle. The Atoms got win number two in dominating fashion vs Lewis. The Atoms lose a great crop of seniors led by first team selections, Rodolfo Duncan, Thyrese Ofosu, and Ivan Flores-Gomez but return a solid core of players including second team lineback Dominic Vejcik and Quarterback Lukas Wuhrer. Be on the lookout for the Atoms in 2024!

The Golf team had six golfers in 2022 and grew that number to 14 in 2023! The team worked hard everyday at practice and it showed throughout their matches as their individual and team scores got better with each match. The Atoms narrowly missed out on a win to Justice, falling just a few strokes short of beating the Wolves. The Atoms had several golfers score in the 40’s during their matches but the big highlight came from freshman Carter Demers and his score of 85 in the National DIstrict Championship to qualify him for the Occoquan Region Tournament at Twin Lakes. Carter performed well in the region tournament but his score unfortunately did not qualify him for states. The Atoms lose one senior and return a solid group of underclassmen to a program that looks to continue its growth in 2024!

Our freshman and JV volleyball teams showed tremendous growth throughout the season, with JV winning their match vs Park View and taking several matches to three sets before falling in the last set. Varsity Volleyball had a challenging year with many competitive games that one or two bounces could have changed the outcome of many games. What was on point every game was the energy and passion the team brought to the floor every night. The results may not have been what the program expected but watching this team go all out every night was a pleasure to watch! The team demonstrated their resiliency and determination to work together and challenge each other to be better. Atoms lost several key seniors from the rotation but return some underclassmen who are ready to take over in 2024 including second team setter Sarah Murphy.

Last but certainly not least is our Field Hockey teams. JV had many girls who were playing for the first time but showed determination to get better and it paid off with multiple victories. Varsity field hockey had one of the toughest schedules in Northern Virginia, playing multiple teams who are competing deep in postseason play. However, the Atoms didn’t back down and the tough schedule paid off as the Atoms went undefeated in regular season district play, for the second year in a row, and secured the number one seed!  The Atoms looked poised to defend their district championship but heartbreak occurred during the second overtime as Hayfield snuck one in the back of the net to get the win. The Atoms season came to an end in the region quarterfinals but it was another special season for the program who looked locked in to make another run at a district championship in 2024. They lose district selections Katherine Lyons and Ros McClendon but return a core of players including first team selections Ripley Hotaling, Lilly Flores, Sofia Saavedra and two time National District Player of the Year Callia Uviedo.

Winter Season

Boys Basketball. Freshman boys competed game in and game out progressively getting better and finishing with a few wins on their record. The JV team was filled with a lot of talent, many of whom played freshman basketball last year. The team worked hard every game and ended the season with several wins. Varsity returned two players from last years’ team and were competitive in every game. The season is highlighted by big wins over rival Falls Church and Justice but no win was bigger than the route of state contender Edison in front of a packed home crowd! The team loses first team all district and second team all region player JR Nelson and role player Jeff Pewitt but return an abundance of talent led by all district selection Nat Akilu and high flyer Jeremiah Nelson.

Freshman and JV Girls Basketball had competitive seasons with a lot of growth and fun being had by all. The freshman had a team of girls who had never played before but their dedication to getting better was highlighted by an exciting win over Lewis!  JV had an impressive year highlighted by the six wins compared to 4 from last year. Varsity returned two players from last year but the team worked hard to prepare for the season and it showed as the Atoms won their first two games to start the season. The Atoms went on to beat Lewis twice in the district and narrowly missed out on the 6 seed in the tournament falling to Justice and Mt. Vernon in the last minutes of the game. The Atoms were paced by first team all district and second team all region sophomore Ava Sewall and district selection senior Susan Aburish. The Atoms lose several players this year but return some talent led by sophomores Matilda Moreland and Fatamata Musa.

Gymnastics continues to grow and get better as the team welcomed several new members that brought energy and passion to the program. The team gelled together and it was evident with their constant improvements and personal best scores with each meet. The team was highlighted by sophomore Kate Hanlen and her all around performance at the National District Meet to qualify her for the Occoquan Region Meet. Kate would go on to represent Annandale in the region meet but her score was not enough to qualify for states. The team loses two seniors but returns some talented underclassmen who look to continue moving this program forward!

Indoor Track had many athletes continue the trend of setting personal best at multiple meets. The girls team leaned on some veterans to help pull them through the season and district meet. The Atoms were led by Pamela Moura, who captured the District Championship in the Triple Jump, finished 3rd in the long jump and 6th in the 300m hurdles.  Other members who had a successful championship meet was the runner up finish  by 4x200 relay of team of Sofia Castillo-Pena, Julia Goforth, Pamela Moura, and Amaya Sutton-Antezana and the 4th place finish by Keira Dalrymple in the 1000m run.

The Boys team had a rebuilding year after losing All state performer Miles Lanham and district champion Noah williams. However, the Atoms Worked hard everyday to make themselves better and it showed as their personal best times continued to improve with each meet. The program returns around 90% of the athletes who competed on a weekly basis and look to show the National District what they have coming.

Wrestling continues to move in the right direction as participation numbers continue to grow with many of the wrestlers who hit the mat this year as underclassmen. The team competed in several tournaments with a few Atoms having impressive showings. The team returns an abundance of talent including National District Champion, Region runner up, and state qualifier Jordy Lopez Funes and district third place and region qualifier Junior Vera Pena. The team returns a core of wrestlers who are hungry and have already started hitting the mat this off season.

Swim and Dive had a good number of returners to the program this season and the future continues to look brigh! The girls team had personal best times throughout the season and unfortunately lose several seniors who have been a great core to the program but return several swimmers who look to continue the success of the program including Melanie Decareau and region qualifier diver Anna Fitzgerald. Melanie missed out on a district championship in the 50 free by .01 seconds but settled for runner up and qualified for the region meet with her results. Melanie had an incredible final swim in the region meet and qualified for states by .8 seconds. Melanie qualified for finals after an thrilling swim off.  She looks to return there next year!

The boys team had a record setting year, highlighted by district champions Noah Popp in the 100m Backstroke and Colin McGee in the 200 IM. Colin would go on to qualify for the state meet in the 100M Breaststroke and in his prelim swim, he would tie the school record time of 58.15 and qualify for the A finals of the state meet where he placed 8th. Noah would on to qualify for states in the 50M free. Our relay teams had great success with second place finishes in the district championship meet by the 200 medley relay, 200 and 400 freestyle relays. It must be noted that the 200 medley relay with members Noah Popp, Colin McGee, James Chilton, and Finnian Sample and 200 freestyle relay of James Chilton, Matthew Munoz, Finnian Sample, and Noah Popp broke the school record with their swims in the region meet. The 200 medley relay team qualified for states with their region prelim time. At states the relay had a great swim to qualify for the B finals where they finished 12th overall. The team lose 3 swimmers but return an abundance of hungry swimmers who look to make it back to states.

Spring Season

JV Baseball welcomed players who were brand new to baseball but their attitude and effort was one to be desired by all. The players dedicated themselves to getting better and having fun. The team always had a positive attitude and enjoyed their season. The Atoms started the year off with an exciting come from behind win over Mt. Vernon that saw the Majors hold an 8-2 lead in the 5th inning, before the Atoms rallied back to win the game 9-8!  The Atoms played well throughout the season highlighted by a stretch where they won 5 of 6 to help secure a home district playoff game. The Atoms lost a tough one in the district tournament and ended their season to West Potomac who tomorrow night will play for the region championship. The team loses a great group of seniors including 2nd team district selection Jace Colato and Zack Plank but return district selection Andrew McGee and several underclassmen who are primed to take over.

Softball has several things to celebrate but one of the biggest is the return of the JV team for the first time since before COVID. The team had a lot of fun throughout the season and is highlighted by their win over Lewis in the next to last game of the season! Varsity had an up and down year but showed toughness throughout the season including a stretch where they won 3 of 4 games to keep themselves in the hunt to host a tournament game. The Atoms ultimately went into the tournament as the 5 seed and battled with TJ in an exciting game back and forth game. TJ won the game in a walk off but the Atoms showed they wouldn’t go easy taking it all the way to the bottom of the 7th. This season was a true team effort but the team had several individual highlights including 2nd team all district pitcher Teagan Scott-Daniels and outfielder Trinity Tompkins. For the second year in a row Teagan surpassed the 100 strikeouts for the season, which has not been done at Annandale in quite some time!

Boys Lacrosse continues to get better and move in the right direction. This is evident with their tryout numbers being close to 60 players on day 1. Their attitude and perseverance continues to show as they competed hard every game. JV boys had many new players for the first time and the continued growth of the team has this program looking up. The varsity returned some youth to a team that is on the verge of busting through. Last year the Atoms didn’t win a district game but that wasn’t the case this year as the team beat Mt. Vernon and Lewis in an exciting OT game to qualify for the region tournament. The program loses several senior but return some hungry underclassmen including second team district selection Jason Perloff among others.

Girls Lacrosse played hard against a tough district schedule. The JV Atoms played with a never give up attitude and determination to always stay in the game. Varsity competed game in and game out and their will to get better never stopped. The season was highlighted by dominant wins over Mt. Vernon and Lewis to finish 6th place and qualify them for the Region Tournament. The team graduates several seniors including 1st team all district Attack Bridget Murray and 2nd teamers Abbie Lee and Ros McClendon. The Atoms return a few underclassmen including district selections Ripley Hotaling and Anna Pemberton to continue moving in the right direction.

Girls Soccer had a tremendous season. The JV team battled all year coming away with an 8-2-2 record to set the tone for future of this program! Varsity followed up last years season with another impressive season. The team started out slow but the finish is what matters as the Atoms won 5 of their last 6 games by a total of 25-8 to secure the 3 seed in the district tournament. The Atoms avenged an earlier loss to rival Falls Church in the district quarterfinals. Their season came to an end vs a hot Woodson who plays tomorrow for a chance at the region Championship. The program has a youth returning next year that saw a lot of action including first team all district selections Melanie Decareau, Erin Hanlen, and second team goalie Sara Nagle but look to replace several contributing seniors including first team selection Jana Russell.

Boys soccer gave some exciting moments this season as the JV team showed flashes of what the future looks like for this program including a 5-0 win over District powerhouse Lewis. The varsity team started the season slow with an 0-3-2 record but turned it around winning 6 of their last 7 to become the 3 seed in the district tournament. The Atoms took care of Justice and Falls church to secure their spot in the district championship. The game was a back and forth affair that saw the Atoms trail 5-2 in the second half. A furry of goals put the Atoms back in the game but the Lancers put it away in the last 15 minutes to deny the Atoms of their first district championship since 1993. The Atoms hosted Woodson in the region quarterfinals but an unfortunate deflection in the box brought an impressive year to a close. The team says goodbye to several seniors, including first team all district player Felipe Rodriguez and all district selections, Shahid Hussen and Logan Graham. The Atoms look poised to make another run next year as they return first team selections Marcus Cortes and Vincent Belteton. Be on the lookout for the Atoms in 2025.

Boys Tennis had a large turnout for tryouts and one of their better seasons in recent memory. The team had underclassmen who saw a lot of time on the court and at times it showed. However, the team worked hard and beat Mt. Vernon twice and Justice to slide in the 6th spot and qualify for the region tournament. The team loses a handful of seniors but look forward to next year when they return several underclassmen including all district selection, Leo Marzigliano, VJ Mum, and Austin Graham.

Girls Tennis had probably the largest turnout in school history with over 50 girls participating. This is a testament to the coaching staff and program for their continued drive to grow the game of tennis at Annandale High School. The team had a successful year winning multiple matches and qualifying for the region tournament as a team. Several Atoms played well in the district tournament including sophomore Lizzy Gronberg who won her first match and moved on to the quarterfinals. Lizzy and Madison Mum were selected for 2nd team all district doubles, while Madison was selected for singles too. The team graduates 3 seniors but have several players ready to step up for 2025.

Outdoor Track & Field had some success throughout the season with a couple athletes qualifying for the state championship in their first meet of the season. The girls team were once again led by Pamela Moura who was runner up in the long jump, finished 4th in the triple jump, and a member of multiple relays that took third place. Joelle Brew-Riverson took third place in the discus, while our girls 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 relay teams all took third place in their respective events. Several of those members are seniors and will be missed!

The boys teams continued to be in their youth movement but the Atoms were highlighted by Jeremiah Nelson, who won the National District Championship in the High jump, and Yannis Ibo Ilenga who both qualified for the state championship meet this coming weekend!

We look forward to more of your support in the 2024-2025!
