1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

Congratulations to all our seniors on their last day of school!

We are eagerly anticipating an exciting graduation week, starting with our graduation rehearsal on Monday morning at 9:00 am in the main gym. Seniors, please remember to arrive by 1:00 pm on Thursday, ensuring we are ready for our 2:00 pm ceremony start time. All graduation details can be found on our Woodson High School Class of 2024 page.

It was wonderful to celebrate our seniors at the annual Senior Awards Ceremony this past Thursday. We recognized the hard work of 55 students who have achieved remarkable accomplishments and made significant contributions to our community. A special thank you to Christine Lieb-Mosley and Josh Peters for their dedication in coordinating this special event.

Our underclass will also have an exciting week next week with final exams and shorter school days starting on June 6th. Please refer to the detailed schedule information below.

Our students continue to excel and give back. This month, Rida Karim received the prestigious Region Affiliate Gold Award from NCWIT Aspirations in Computing, and Tiffany Park captivated a room full of business and educational leaders at the "Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation" event. Additionally, our community demonstrated remarkable generosity at Relay For Life, raising over $55,000 for cancer research. A special mention goes to Team Believe for their outstanding contribution of $38,000 towards this noble cause.

Exciting news from our athletic teams! Our Soccer, Tennis, and Girls Lacrosse teams are progressing to the VHSL State Championships. Follow our Instagram accounts for live scores and updates on their journey. Let's also congratulate the Class of 2024 senior athletes, recently honored at our Athletic College Commitment Ceremony. We celebrated 33 seniors who have committed to playing their respective sports at the collegiate level, showcasing their dedication and talent.

Tonight, we have the girls and boys soccer regional finals at Thomas Jefferson High School, starting at 5:00 pm. Come out and support our teams!

Check out our inaugural extended podcast, immediately following the audio version to hear about our trip to the Carter G Woodson Celebration day in Buckingham County.

I also want to thank you for your patience in waiting for an update about yearbook distribution. We will be sending out an update as soon as we can.

Have a great weekend Woodson!

8. Counselor Corner

Before we wrap up another amazing year, we are busy working to ensure that seniors have a seamless post-secondary transition and that we support our rising seniors to make the most of the time they have before senior year begins! Students in the Class of 2025 received a Senior Prep Lesson this week to highlight what they should be doing this summer to prepare for senior year. Be sure to discuss post-secondary plans with your rising senior and how to support them in their endeavors to use the most of their time this summer. They should be familiarizing themselves with the Senior Padlet, finalizing their list of 5-7 colleges (and deciding deadlines), working on essays, visiting colleges, and preparing to complete the Common App when it opens Aug. 1. The College padlet has many great resources, like testing info, essay-writing support, and college research. This and many specialty padlets are located on the College & Career Center padlet

As we celebrate the Class of 2024 and wish them well on their future endeavors, we hosted Senior Awards. Seniors earned more than 3 million dollars in scholarship money and were recognized by faculty and community members as outstanding scholars, leaders, and contributing citizens. We guided students through their Senior Survey, in which they identified their post-secondary plan and if attending college, identified which college will receive their final transcript. After graduation, counselors will work hard to submit final transcripts. Any senior who has not completed their Senior Survey will need to complete this before Senior Clearance after graduation practice on Monday June 3.

Underclassmen intent on taking a summer class should not delay to register. Self-directed Econ & Finance closed on May 24. HPE 10 is full and on a wait list. Any family with questions about summer school may contact their counselor. Students in need of credit recovery due to failing a core course may register for free. Please let your school counselor know once you register for a summer class. Bear in mind that school counselors do not work in summer, so if you receive an auto reply this summer, we will respond in August. It’s a pleasure to serve our community. We wish all families a happy & safe summer!

11. PSAT/NMSQT (Grade 10-11) and SAT Day (Grade 12)

Digital SAT Replaces Paper in 2024-25

This October, the SAT School Day will be administered in a digital format nationwide. Some testing accommodations are administered differently for digital tests than paper/pencil tests. See information about accommodations for students with disabilities.

SAT School Day and PSAT/NMSQT

SAT School Day and PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) exams will be held at each high school on Wednesday, October 9, at no cost to families. The digital SAT School Day exam is offered to 12th-grade students, and the digital PSAT/NMSQT exam is provided to 10th and 11th-grade students.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities and Multilingual Learner Supports

Because the College Board operates these exams, students receive testing accommodations or support only sometimes. If you have a student with disabilities entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade or have a multilingual student entering 12th grade, please review the accommodations request process and/or EL support request process and return forms to the high school by Monday, August 5.
