PTSO News

Parents! Your help is URGENTLY needed!

The Woodson All Night Grad Party does not have enough chaperones to make the party happen! The Woodson tradition is that freshman, sophomore, and junior parents volunteer at the event to “pay it forward” for the year their own child will graduate.

Please sign up to help us! It’s a really fun night and it can’t happen without you!  Coffee and refreshments will be provided to all volunteers!

The All Night Grad Party (formerly known as the Cav Cruise) is an event that was started in Fairfax County to keep graduating seniors safe in a “lock-in” all night, drug and alcohol free event. Since the start of these parties in the 1980s, there have been no student deaths associated with FCPS all night grad parties.

Varsity Softball:

The Varsity Softball Team would like to thank all their fans, parents, teachers, and the athletic staff for supporting them during their season.   Unfortunately it has come to an end.  Emma Fleming and Claire Warden will continue their softball journey next year at Catholic University (Emma: 2nd base) and Brandeis University (Claire: Pitcher).

Monday, the team defeated Annandale High School 11-0.  Sedona Adams collected four hits at bat.  Claire Warden struck out 11 batters on the day.  Woodson added to their early lead when Emma Fleming doubled and Delaney Fleming singled, scoring two runs.

Friday the team traveled to Edison High school and lost 8-0. Kelby Lennen, Sedona Adams and Sam Kliein each collected one hit for Woodson.   Claire Warden took the loss for the Cavaliers.  The starting pitcher went six innings striking out 10 batters.

Congratulations to all the Regional Athletes. Our district is a very tough district to compete in!  Many had personal bests during these 2 days to finish their season. Congrats to Kendall Anderson for joining Ashley Lofton in the 200 m at states. The girls 4 x800 set another school record. The girls 4x400 time qualified them for states. The boys 4x400 and 4x800 relays also moved onto states. Justin Anderson broke his own school record in the 400 m. Zain Elcock qualified for states in the 800 m. David Freeman finished 3rd in the 300 m hurdles for a state spot. Colleen Gilbert (high jump) and Taityn Speier (pole vault) both placed 2nd and will be representing Woodson at States.  Good Luck to all the Athletes this week as they travel to the State Championship!

Varsity Girls Lacrosse:

On Tuesday evening, the Woodson girls’ lacrosse team faced off against the National District champions, the Justice High School Wolves, in the Occoquan regional semifinals. The draw trio of seniors Greer Dempster, Reese Cuviello, and Julia Lieberman quickly took control, leading to a swift first-quarter advantage with a pair of goals by Cuviello, an 8-meter shot by sophomore Kaitlyn Viilu, and a connection from Lieberman to senior Ilsa Castleton.

The second quarter saw continued dominance as junior Kendall Schottler executed an outstanding clear, transitioning the ball to senior Milla Cronin, who found Lieberman for a quick score. Senior Greer Dempster added two more goals, thanks to smooth passes from Cuviello and Lieberman, rounding out a strong first half.

The second half started slow, with no scoring from either team for over six minutes. Woodson's defenders played tight, forcing low-angle shots that were easily picked up by senior goalie Josi Owens. Then, Dempster found senior Alex Walrath in transition for a quick score, followed by Lieberman finding Cronin on an inside cut with a perfectly placed pass. Walrath netted another score with a slick dodge from the top side.  With the game secure, many Woodson Cavs saw regional playoff action, and sophomore Anabelle Robinson netted the final Woodson score.  Woodson points:  Reese Cuviello (2 goal, 1 assist), Ilsa Castleton (1 goal), Julia Lieberman (1 goal, 2 assists), Kaitlyn Viilu (1 goal), Milla Cronin (1 goal, 1 assist), Greer Dempster (2 goals), Alex Walrath (2 goals, 1 assist), Anabelle Robinson (1 goal).

Friday night was a thrilling showdown at Robinson High School as the Cavs faced off against the Robinson Rams for the Occoquan Region Championship. The game started evenly, with Julia Lieberman scoring on a crease roll in the 1st quarter. In the 2nd quarter, Alex Walrath netted an 8-meter shot, followed by a pair of impressive crease rolls from Reese Cuviello. Despite these efforts, Woodson trailed 6-4 at halftime.

Robinson pulled ahead in the second half with a whopping seven goals from 8-meter free positions. Lieberman added two more goals with her signature crease rolls, but early double teams and limited open players hampered the Cavs' offense. Turnovers and a struggle for draw controls ultimately led to Woodson finishing as the runner-up in the Occoquan Region. Woodson points:  Julia Lieberman (3 goals), Reese Cuviello (2 goals), Alex Walrath (1 goal).

Let's give a big round of applause for Cavalier's outstanding All-Region team selections! Leading the charge, we have the unstoppable Julia Lieberman dominating on Attack, the dynamic Reese Cuviello commanding the Midfield, and the rock-solid Ella Mathias fortifying our Defense.  Reese Cuviello has also been crowned Region Player of the Year for her phenomenal performance. And a special shoutout to Coach Mike Schneider, who has been honored as Region Coach of the Year.

Next up for Woodson girls’ lacrosse is the VA class 6 state quarterfinals this coming Saturday against Yorktown high school.
