1. Message from Mr. Greata

Good Afternoon Woodson,

It has been an amazing week at Woodson and I am excited to share with you the recent accomplishments and upcoming opportunities within our vibrant school community.

This past week, our students displayed exceptional talent and creativity at the Pyramid Art Show and the Senior/AP Art Show. I was truly impressed by the variety and depth of the artwork presented. Each exhibition was unique and demonstrated the individual expressiveness and perspectives of our amazing student artists. Additionally, our band, orchestra, chorus, and guitar students broadened their horizons on their trip to New York City, where they received world-class instruction and visited significant cultural sites, including the 911 Memorial and Times Square.

Our College Partnership Program students recently visited St. Mary’s College of Maryland, gaining valuable insights into college life and opportunities. College Partnership Program is a countywide enrichment program that supports students as they explore, apply to, and enroll in college. This trip is just one of the many ways we support our students in their journey to higher education. Thank you Eileen Oviatt, Bryce Benson, Katherine Stransky, and Megan Howard for planning and supporting this trip.

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all who contribute to the success of our school. Next Wednesday we will be celebrating our administrative staff in the front office, student services, and CSS program, on Administrative Professionals Day. They deserve a special mention for their unwavering support of our school community. They set the welcoming tone at our school and are always ready to assist anyone, anytime.

We were also honored to thank our military families at this month’s breakfast, highlighting the strength their community brings to our community. Events like these serve as a testament to the resilience and commitment that run deep within our school community. Thank you to our Military Family and Life Counselor Alaina Anderson, DSS Josh Peters, Admin Assistant Debbie Glover, Counselors Adrienne Wood and Lizzie Walter for organizing this event. And thank you to everyone that put on purple this past Wednesday to show support for these cherished families.

There are lots of ways to get involved at Woodson next week, including our INOVA blood drive, PTSO Survey Fundraiser, AP proctoring, and joining the PTSO Board of Directors. Please see below for more information about each of these opportunities.

Have a great weekend,

Kevin Greata
Principal

2. 3rd Quarter Report Cards

3rd Quarter Report Cards were distributed to students on Thursday, April 18th during 7th period.

If your student has an off-campus waiver or Academy class for 7th period, their report card is in the Student Services office for pickup.

3. Month of the Military Child

Did you know?

  • We wear the color purple on PurpleUp! Day because it was chosen to symbolize all branches of the military, as it is a combination of Army green, Marine Corps crimson, and Coast Guard, Air Force, Space Force and Navy blue.
  • The Army, which is the oldest branch of the U.S military, is also the service branch with the most personnel. In 2022, there were 461,657 active members. The Navy is the second largest with 346,000 and it was founded on October 13, 1775.

All hardware repairs must be completed by Tuesday, April 25th.

We want to also remind families that students may not have access to their electronic personal devices of any kind (phones, watches, etc.) in the SOL testing environment, except in the case of a documented medical need.  Please be aware that any personal devices carried into the testing environment will be subject to the school’s established procedures for addressing this as a test security concern.

Woodson students of College Partnership Program attends college visit

This week our College Partnership Program (CPP) visited St. Mary’s College of Maryland where they participated in an information session with an admissions officer, took a student-led tour, and ate lunch in the campus dining hall.
Thank you Eileen Oviatt, Bryce Benson, Katherine Stransky, and Megan Howard for being mentors for this student group!

9. Woodson Sports Physical Night - June 10th

Woodson ATC Logo

Every year, the Woodson Athletic Training Program hosts a Sports Physical Night. The goal of Sports Physical Night is to provide a complete pre-participation examination screening that will leave student athletes with a valid VHSL physical for the entirety of the following school year. Each year, it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports. The price will be $50 as it has been in previous years. Hosting this event is our Athletic Training Program’s ONLY fundraiser for the year as we DO NOT receive any funding from the county. ALL proceeds go towards helping the program purchase supplies. Without your support we would not be able to provide the services we do for our student-athletes. If you are interested, please sign up for an appointment slot here.

As always, if you cannot make it to our night on June 10th, but still want to support FCPS, feel free to sign up for another school's event! Every school will host (or co-host) their own night. (We promise we won't be mad).

Want to Volunteer??

We are always looking for physicians and HCP's to complete the actual physical exams (MD, DO, NP, PA) as well other HCP’s comfortable with taking vital signs. If you are willing and able to donate your time, it is greatly appreciated. You can sign up here.

If you can’t make it, but you know of some others that would be able to assist us, please feel free to spread the word and sign up sheet! If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out to Chris Hogge, ATC at chogge@fcps.edu .

10. FAFSA Help

According to recent news reports, as many as 30% fewer graduating seniors have completed and submitted a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Many schools rely upon this form to grant students financial aid award letters.

Families who have questions or persistent issues filling out the FAFSA might consider scheduling a free appointment with our partners at College Access Fairfax. Email appointments@CollegeAccessFairfax.org. All FAFSA help provided by our school or College Access Fairfax is free.

11. College & Career Center

Resources for College & Career planning can be found on the Woodson College & Career Padlets. All upcoming events with registration links and more detailed info are listed in the Woodson Wide School Calendar. College & Career Center Newsletters are posted HERE.

Emma Miller, Woodson Teacher receives FCPS CARES winner

Congratulations to Ms. Emma Miller for being selected as the February winner for the FCPS CARES Award!

12. Spring 2024 Advanced Placement (AP) Testing Attendance

AP exams are administered May 6-May 16, 2024. With parent/guardian permission, Woodson HS students are allowed to be released early following a morning AP exam and arrive late before their scheduled afternoon AP exam. All pre-arranged absence forms (no phone calls or emails) are due to Mrs. Little in the attendance office by 3pm April 19th. Please keep in mind that all classes will continue with instruction during AP testing, and that students are responsible for all assignments from each class. AP Excused Absence Forms will be given to students in their AP classes and available in the Attendance Office.

Student Services is also still looking for parent volunteers to help proctor AP exams in May! Shifts are typically from 7:30-11:30am or 11:00-3:00pm, with some variation depending on the exam, and you may sign up for as many shifts as you’d like. A more specific schedule will be shared closer to the AP exam testing window. No experience or training is required…we’ll show you everything you need to know! If you are able to volunteer and help, please contact Woodson school counselors Jamie Korpacz (jlkorpacz@fcps.edu) and Victoria Powell (vpowell1@fcps.edu). Thank you!

13. PTSO Information

The Woodson PTSO is in need of 3 parents that are able to volunteer their time to join the 2024-2025 PTSO Officer Board. If you are interested or would like to learn more about the positions that will be open, please contact PTSO Co-President Sara Mastro at saralmastro@yahoo.com.

Survey Participants Still Needed!

Dr. Ben Bigelow from the Construction Science Division at University of Oklahoma selected parents and guardians at Woodson to participate in their research titled “Influences and Perceptions of Parents on Construction Careers.” This research is being conducted at the University of Oklahoma.

There is an ongoing shortage of skilled tradespeople in construction and this project seeks to better understand parent’s perceptions, preferences, and motivators relating to career pathways.  As primary influencers of the next generation of workers, parental perceptions are vital in understanding how to address the shortage of skilled workers.

This survey is collecting perceptions from parents around the country to identify the best strategies for addressing this issue.

If the Woodson PTSO gets enough participants, they will donate $500 to our PTSO!
