Do you have 2 minutes to spare? PTSO needs only 450 more survey responses for a $500 donation!

Dr. Ben Bigelow from the Construction Science Division at University of Oklahoma selected parents and guardians at Woodson to participate in their research titled “Influences and Perceptions of Parents on Construction Careers.” This research is being conducted at the University of Oklahoma.

There is an ongoing shortage of skilled tradespeople in construction, this project seeks to better understand parent’s perceptions, preferences, and motivators relating to career pathways.  As primary influencers of the next generation of workers, parental perceptions are vital in understanding how to address the shortage of skilled workers.

This survey is collecting perceptions from parents around the country to identify the best strategies for addressing this issue.

If we get enough participants, they will donate $500 to our PTSO!

The Musical 1776 at Woodson

Check out the highly energized production of the musical 1776 at Woodson running this Friday and Saturday. Before there was Hamilton there was 1776 – John Adams is desperately trying to create America – but to do so he must defeat the English, unite the colonies, and convince the people it’s the right decision -  and the result is an epic show of passion, debate, and roof-raising musical fireworks. A musical where people aren't just fighting to create America, but for its very soul.

Parent Volunteers Needed!

Calling all Woodson parents…we need you to help proctor AP exams in May! As you know, we administer thousands of AP exams each spring to our Cavaliers and it takes a great deal of planning to implement and execute such a large scale testing plan. We rely on parent volunteers to proctor and cannot administer these without your help! This year, AP exams run from May 6-17. Shifts are typically from 7:30-11:30am or 11:00-3:00pm, with some variation depending on the exam, and you may sign up for as many shifts as you’d like. A more specific schedule will be shared closer to the AP exam testing window. No experience or training is required…we’ll show you everything you need to know! If you are able to volunteer and help, please contact Woodson school counselors Jamie Korpacz (jlkorpacz@fcps.edu) and Victoria Powell (vpowell1@fcps.edu). Thank you!

Varsity Softball:

Woodson Cavaliers had another tough week with a loss against South County and Robinson. Emma Fleming and Sedona Adams led Woodson with two hits. There were no errors and Sam Klein made the most plays in the game!

JV Baseball:

Woodson JV Cavaliers defeated the Fairfax Lions 6-3 in a Friday Night SmackDown.

Freshman Ben Torbert led the home team Cavs, pitching 5 2/3 quality innings and giving up 5 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 7. He was relieved by Will Wise who blanked the Lions for the remaining 1 1/3 innings, surrendering just 1 hit and striking out 2.

Once again, the Cavalier attack was paced by Sophomore Barrett Pullen who went 2-for-2 from the plate with a single, a double, a hit-by-pitch, and 2 RBIs. The first baseman is sporting a .400 batting average with 5 RBIs over the season's first 5 games. Evan Honeysett, Ray Rivera, Colton Mayes, Nick Prabhakar, and Grant Reynolds all connected for singles in the game.

Woodson had a solid game defensively as well. 3rd Baseman Reynolds and Centerfielder Rivera flashed the leather and turned in highlight-worthy web gems for the Cavs.

The Woodson JV Cavaliers won their second consecutive game on Monday evening, defeating the South County JV Stallions 9-2 at South County High School.

Woodson was led by Sophomore, "You Are My Sunshine, My Only Sunshine" Will Wise who threw 5 innings, giving up just 1 hit and no earned runs on 4 strikeouts and 3 walks.

The Cavaliers' 8-hit attack included 2 hits and 3 RBIs from catcher Callum Keller, a 2-RBI triple from right fielder Evan Honeysett, and doubles from infielders Grant Reynolds and Kai McMurry. Ray Rivera, Nick Prabhakar, and Reynolds also had singles in the contest.

The Stallions appeared to have been blinded by the light of Cavs hurlers Wise, Liam Wade, and Adam Stuhrke. The ponies' only hit in the game was a lone single by third baseman William Middleton

JV Boys Soccer:

Woodson Goalies had a clean sheet winning 2-0 against Fairfax.  The first goal came at minute10 by Jake Foust with support from Aseel Aloyhiam and in the 52nd minute Aseel Aloyhiam scored the winning goal.

Varsity Girls Lacrosse:

The Woodson Cavaliers girl’s lacrosse squad wrapped up an epic spring break journey and two weeks filled with exciting Patriot district showdowns.

Their spring break adventure took them to the sunny fields of Orlando, Florida, where they faced off against strong competitors from Poly Prep and The Dalton School, both hailing from the Big Apple. In a display of pure grit under the sun, the Woodson girls emerged victorious.

Returning home to Fairfax, the Cavaliers encountered the formidable Westfield High School Bulldogs. Initially trailing 8 to 2, the Cavs refused to back down. Led by the unstoppable Reese Cuviello with 6 goals and 1 assist, they fought tooth and nail to turn the tide. With just minutes remaining, they seized the lead, only to be pushed into sudden-death overtime by a determined Westfield squad. Though the final score didn’t swing in their favor, the Cavs left it all on the field with a thrilling 12-13 finish.  Woodson points:  Reese Cuviello (6 goals, 1 assist), Ilsa Castleton (4 goals), Julia Lieberman (1 goal), Greer Dempster (1 goal), and Alex Walrath (2 assists).

Their resilience carried into their clash with the revitalized South County Stallions. Bolstered by stellar defensive plays and the unwavering prowess of senior goalies Maddie Gaboury and Josi Owens, the Lady Cavs dominated. Goals came in a flurry from players like Alex Walrath, Eva Lennon, and Greer Dempster, leaving the Stallions in their wake.  Woodson points:  Alex Walrath (2 goals), Eva Lennon (2 goals), Greer Dempster (2 goals, 1 assist), Siera Simmons (2 goals, 1 assist), Kaitlyn Viilu (2 goals), Julia Lieberman (1 goal, 1 assist), Milla Cronin (1 goal), Reese Cuviello (1 goal, 1 assist), Ilsa Castleton (1 goal), Allison Leonard (1 goal), and Julia Oleyar (1 goal).

This past Friday night, the Cavaliers faced off against cross-town rivals, the West Springfield Spartans. The Cavs started out sluggishly in the 1st quarter but kept the game close through outstanding goalie play by senior Maddie Gaboury, and senior defensive players Ella Mathias, Jamie Ellenberger, Julia Oleyar, and Kendall Schottler. The Woodson girls eventually found their rhythm, turning the tables in the second quarter with a relentless offensive onslaught led by Reese Cuviello, who scored a coast-to-coast (called back) goal with one second before halftime. By the final whistle, they emerged victorious, marking another gripping chapter in their season. Woodson points: Reese Cuviello (5 goals), Julia Lieberman (1 goal, 2 assists), Alex Walrath (3 goals), Greer Dempster (1 goal), Kaitlyn Viilu (1 goal), Elle Marshal (1 goal), Milla Cronin (1 assist), Ilsa Castleton (1 assist).

As the week unfolds, anticipation mounts for the Woodson girls’ lacrosse team. With upcoming battles against Lake Braddock Bruins (Home Monday 4/15 7:15pm), and Robinson Rams (Away Wednesday 4/17 7:15pm), followed by a momentous Senior Night showdown against Alexandria City (Home Friday 4/19 7:15pm) , the stage is set for more electrifying action under the lights. Strap in, fans – the best is yet to come!

Ice Hockey Club:

On April 8th, the Woodson Ice Hockey Club held its annual Awards Banquet to recognize the efforts of the players, coaches, and volunteers on an outstanding season, which included seven wins to include the team’s first playoff win in four years.  The following players were recognized for the Capitals Scholastic Hockey League All Academic Team:  Henry Persky, Ethan Lan, Theodore Anderson, Carson Edington, Derek Hanson, Max Eister, Wyatt Borgeson, and Barrett Wilford.  Theodore Anderson received the Cavalier Award for best teammate and Barrett Wilford was recognized as the Most Improved Player.  Carson Edington received the National High School Hobey Baker Award for his achievements on and off the ice for continuing the legacy of Hobey Baker by demonstrating exceptional hockey skills, leadership, character, sportsmanship, scholastic achievement, and love of the game.  The club is appreciative for the support from students and faculty who cheered on the team.

From the desk of Congressman Gerry Connolly, Virginia’s 11th District:

Congressional Art Competition - Deadline April 29, 2024

I want to take this opportunity to bring the Congressional Art Competition to your attention. This competition is open to all high school students who are residents of the 11th Congressional District, regardless of where they attend school. Public, private, and home-schooled students are all invited to participate, and I encourage any student who may be interested to submit an entry.

I look forward to hosting this event every year, as it affords students in our district the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent and creativity. Students do not need to create a new piece of art specifically for this competition – they are welcome to submit any piece from their portfolio.  Past years’ competitions have included paintings, photographs, drawings, digital art, and more.

The winning piece will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year, and with the permission of the artists, additional high-ranking pieces will be displayed in my Capitol Hill and district offices.

Individual arrangements will be made for the collection of the Best in Show piece to be transported to DC. Only the winning piece will be required to meet the established framing guidelines.
