LCES Updates 3/8/24 This Week's Updates

Social Worker

National School Social Work Week

March 3-9 is National School Social Work Week. We are so fortunate to work with Ms. Swittenberg, our school social worker! She is a wonderful support to our students and families! Social workers in FCPS help to prevent social, emotional, and behavioral factors from affecting a student's ability to perform at their best. Their primary goal is to remove barriers that prevent a student from fulfilling their academic potential. Social workers are assigned to every school and center in the school system. Learn more about the role of social workers in FCPS.

Family Engagement Survey

Dear LCES Families,

Recently, you should have received an email from Fairfax County Public Schools regarding our Family Engagement Survey which will be open from Sunday, March 3, to Friday, March 22.  These results will be reported out across the division to help school principals and school leaders to make informed decisions regarding each individual school.  At Lees Corner, Ms. Hutchinson and I will receive a detailed report that we will be sharing with staff, and overall community- to support our ongoing reflection and improvement.

Thank you again for your feedback contributions and we look forward to hearing from our families.  If you are having trouble finding the survey or have any questions about the survey, you can find more resources and access the survey itself using this site: Family Engagement Survey

Sincerely,

Ms. Sloan & Ms. Hutchinson

Chorus

Chantilly Area Chorus

Congratulations to our 6th grade students who were involved in this year’s Chantilly Area Chorus! This ensemble included students from around the pyramid who rehearsed weekly and then performed in a concert at Chantilly High School on Monday, February 26th. Our students did a fantastic job representing Lees Corner!

March is Family Reading Month!

The Virginia Department of Education is excited to celebrate Family Reading Month in March. Join the Virginia Department of Education & Virginia PTA for Reading Together, a webinar is designed for families to learn about best practices in reading instruction. The event also covers how families can support their students through all stages of learning to read and improving reading comprehension. The webinar will take place on Wednesday, March 13th from 7-8pm. Registration is required to participate and is open to the public.

Can’t make the webinar? Virginia Literacy Partnerships has an excellent resource page for families to provide support for multiple areas of reading development!

Fun Fit Friday

Fun Fit Fridays Will Resume on March 15

"Fun Fit Fridays (or F3)” will resume on Friday, March 15 from 8:10-8:35 AM and run through May 31. If you participated in the fall, you do not need to submit a permission form again. If you did not participate in the fall and would like to participate in the spring, please complete the attached form and return it to your child's teacher by Wednesday, March 13.

Fun Fit Fridays is a token reward program. Each student-participant is issued a running card to keep track of his or her laps and total miles over the course of the year.  Students run/walk as many laps as possible in the 25-minute time period every Friday morning. After a student completes one lap around the track, an adult marks the student’s card. Each completed running card totals 30 laps, or 5 miles. Students receive a toe token each time they complete 5 miles. After 25, 50, 75, and 100 miles, students receive a number token representing the miles completed.

This is an excellent opportunity for your children to meet new friends, enjoy the benefits of running/walking, and develop an appreciation for fitness. We hope this program builds self-confidence and improves fitness levels among our students and within the community. Everyone is welcome to join us!

on time arrival

On Time Arrival

Our school doors open at 8:35 a.m. The bell rings at 8:50 a.m. and students are expected to be in their classrooms ready to learn at 8:50 a.m.  Please plan your arrival to allow for time for your child to walk to their classroom.

The kiss and ride line can get long especially on cloudy or rainy days, please plan ahead for these conditions, so your child will arrive on time.

If you have to drop your child off in front of the school after 8:50 AM, please remember to exercise caution and drive slowly. We still have students arriving by car and by bus and we want to avoid any accidents or injuries.

It’s important to start to a child’s day with normal routines and getting to school on time will help them transition to the classroom. Students who arrive late miss important announcements, directions, and instruction. Thank you for your part in ensuring your child arrives to school on time.
