Westgate Weekly News

Good Afternoon Westgate Families,

Welcome back to school and I hope you had a wonderful and healthy winter break.

As we enter into 2024, please remember to be mindful of our important safety procedures during arrival and dismissal.  As a reminder:

  • There are no left hand turns allowed in, or out of, Kiss & Ride during arrival or dismissal.
  • There are no illegal u-turns allowed in front of the school on Magarity Road.  Please enter kiss and ride from the correct side (towards rt. 7) and follow the traffic pattern, as we've witnessed both student and staff safety being compromised too often.
  • Please ONLY cross your child at the dedicated cross walk (with police officer).  Crossing you children at any other location is not safe.
  • There is NO parking on either side of Magarity Rd. right in front of the school.  Please do not park in these areas.

Our number one priority at Westgate remains student safety.  Thank you for adhering to these very important safety reminders.  Please note that the Fairfax County Police Department will be closely monitoring this situation.

Lastly, our next PTA meeting is this Tuesday, January 9.  This is an interactive  "Be Internet Awesome" family program that will be held from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.  We'll review the fundamentals of digital citizenship for our students and discuss tools and resources to keep our students safer online.  We will have food to enjoy, as well as, give aways for the kids. This is sponsored by a grant from the National PTA, Google, and YouTube.  Please register for the event below by today, Friday, January 5.  We hope to see many of you there!

As always, thank you for your continued support of all things Westgate and wishing you a happy and healthy weekend ahead!

All my best,

Hallie Demetriades

Principal

5th & 6th Grade Chorus Families

Hello 5th and 6th Grade Chorus Families,

Next week we will be having our first chorus concert of the school year.  Your singer has been working so hard and they are truly going to perform beautifully.  Ms. Jennelle and I wanted to send this email as a reminder of a few things as well as give you an update.

Reminders - - - -

Wednesday, January 10:

  1. We will have a dress rehearsal in the morning as well as a concert in the afternoon for the student body.  Please have your singer arrive to school wearing their concert dress.  They should have an all-white top and all black bottom (pants or skirt).
  2. The evening concert will begin at 6:00PM for all families in the gym.  We ask that students report to Ms. Jennelle’s room that evening by 5:40 so they can warm up and get ready for the concert.

Updates - - - - -

  1. On Thursday, January 11 there will be a Marshall Pyramid Concert Workshop.  Due to space constraints, this is for 6th Grade Chorus Members ONLY!!!!!  Please see the attached for all the details about this awesome event.  This is an event that all 6th grade chorus members are expected to attend.
  2. Finally, 6th Grade chorus members also get to have an opportunity to participate in the 6th Grade All-County Chorus Festival.  This year it will be on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 at Hayfield Secondary School.  If your singer would like to be a part of this amazing opportunity, please have them audition on either Tuesday, January 16 or Wednesday, January 17 right after school in Mrs. Schubert’s room.  Also, please indicate what day they will be coming to audition by filling in THIS google form.

We can’t wait to see everyone next week at the concert!

Portrait of a Graduate - Collaborator

Another Portrait of a Graduate attribute we focus on is being a collaborator. As students grow as collaborators, they can successfully work with their classmates, teachers, family, and community members now in the future.

Collaborators:

  • Respect other people’s thinking
  • Work together within a group to learn, be productive, and achieve common goals
  • Consider perspectives to include a variety of viewpoints
  • Give and receive helpful feedback to improve work

Ideas for Discussing Collaboration at Home

Pay attention to when you use collaboration skills throughout your day.  Try to regularly share these examples with your student. Explain how you used specific collaboration skills to work through scenarios. Over time, you might share examples of how you used skills well and opportunities for you to grow, too. Sharing your stories will help build understanding of how skills can be used in and beyond school and why these skills are important.

You might also ask your student questions such as:

  • How did you help someone today?
  • When did you listen to other points of view? What did you learn?
  • How did you help members of your team finish the ____  [activity, project, assignment]?
  • Were there moments when your group struggled? How did you handle that? What did you learn from that experience?
  • How can you be a good collaborator when you are ____ (ex: a member of a team; in a group with people you don’t know yet; disagreeing with someone)?
  • What do you want to remember to be a good collaborator tomorrow?

Zones of Regulation

This year we are excited to have implemented the program, Zones of Regulation at Westgate school wide.  This program teaches students how to name their emotions and build strategies to help manage them.  Emotions are categorized by blue, green, yellow, and red and each color represents a state of alertness.  The green zone is the calmest and a place where we are ready to learn.  You can find out more by clicking this here (English) or here (Spanish).
