Happy New Year!

Dear students, staff, and families,

As we welcome the new year, I extend my heartfelt wishes for a year filled with joy, success, and meaningful achievements. May 2024 be a year of growth, learning, and positive experiences for each member of our school community. Together, let's embrace the opportunities that lie ahead and continue to strive for excellence in all that we do.  Also, remember, attendance matters.  Please make efforts to have your student at school each day unless they have an illness.

We welcome Carol Larsen and Lauren Arreaza to VRES as the new assistant principals.

I know we are anxiously awaiting the announcement of Virginia Run’s new principal.  As soon as I have information to share, I will pass it along.

Happy New Year!

Best regards,

Maureen Boland, Interim Principal

Westfield Pyramid Kindness T-Shirts

Westfield Pyramid Schools are committed to promoting kindness,
empathy, and inclusion. Schools will celebrate Kindness Week in
February and we invite all students and staff in the Westfield Pyramid
to wear their “We Choose Kindness” apparel signifying a personal
commitment to choosing kindness. We are offering short-sleeve shirts
and hooded sweatshirts in black with white and pink ink. Why pink? The color is based on an anti-bullying campaign started by Travis Price and David Shepherd, who took a stand for a fellow student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school.

Order forms are due by January 12th and items will be delivered to your child’s classroom prior to Kindness Week in February. If you would like to purchase, please complete the form that is in your child's Wednesday folder and return to Jenna DeKeuster (school counselor) with checks made out to Virginia Run PTA.

Snow Days This Winter

For the current school year, FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days — there will be no virtual learning days when school is closed due to bad weather.

During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

Eleven snow days are built into the existing FCPS calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will allow us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.

Parent Volunteers Needed for 2023-2024

The VRES Student Council and PTA have partnered up to collect and deliver the leftover unopened school lunch items (milks, yogurts, cheese sticks, bananas, chips, etc.) to our local food pantry at Western Fairfax Christian Ministries. Our students are already doing their part by filling the cafeteria fridge each week. But to make this program a success, we need a parent volunteer, one per week, to pick up and deliver the food to WFCM. Learn more and sign-up for a shift (or more!) at VRES Food Pantry Delivery 2023-2024. Each shift takes about one hour, and clear instructions will be emailed to you once you sign up. Thank you for helping VRES keep good food out of landfills and to serve our community in this way again!

Yearbook Candid Photos

Final call for yearbook candid photos for events prior to winter break: Welcome Walk, Open House and Back to School Picnic, First Day of School, 2nd Grade Book Character Parade, Trunk or Treat and Fall Ball, Field Trips including 6th Grade Camp Highroad, and any other events I forgot to list! Photos can be emailed to Kelly Long at kalong928@yahoo.com. Kindly send by Friday, January 12th. Also, be on the lookout for yearbook sales starting in February!

Distribution of Literature and Fliers

To protect our children from becoming little advertisers and mail carriers, FCPS has clearly described the situation under which children may carry announcements home to parents. (Regulation 1367.1) Students may only carry fliers consistent with the mission of the school: education and the welfare of children. All nonprofit organizations are eligible to submit fliers in accordance with the guidelines below. Charitable solicitations, partisan political organizations, and commercial or profit-making enterprises are excluded with the exception of school-business partnerships and events. Students may not carry advertisements. Non-profit organizations such as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts may only use the backpack system at designated times during the year. The fliers must be representative of something appropriate to the children and not violate any rules of decency, political campaigning, or marketing. These designated times are set by the school principal.

At Virginia Run Elementary, the next 3 dates that Wednesday envelopes may be used for carrying announcements from non-profit organizations are:

January 10, 2024

March 6, 2024

May 8, 2024

**All announcements/fliers must carry the following disclaimer:

These materials are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent, or this school.

All announcements/fliers must be approved by the administration in advance, allowing at least 3 days turn-around time. Upon receiving approval, the organization is responsible for supplying the copies to the school by the Monday preceding the designated envelope. PTA materials and announcements must also be approved in advance, but are not restricted to, the four dates listed. No materials carried by children may promote improper behavior or political opinion.
