Veterans Day Coffee and Donuts

This morning we welcomed our military connected students and their parents to breakfast in honor of Veteran’s Day! We were thrilled to see such a great turnout, and enjoyed getting to celebrate our military connected students and parents. We are thankful for their collective service, and grateful for what they do for our school, community, and country.

NEW News

1. Message from Mr. Greata

We are so proud to have so many staff at our school that are veterans, several of whom continue to serve our country in the reserves. Veterans that choose to serve in schools after their military service are deserving of our highest respect and deepest gratitude. These servant leaders enrich our community in countless ways and serve as a fundamental piece of our school character.

We are so fortunate to serve many military-connected families.  It was wonderful to meet many of these families this morning at our Veteran’s Day Coffee. I would like to thank Alaina Andersen, Mike Kuykendall, Chris Rosebrock, Elizabeth Walter, and Adrienne Wood for organizing this community event and to all our veterans - THANK YOU!

Last night the Fairfax County School Board unanimously voted to change our school’s name to Carter G. Woodson High School, effective July 1, 2024.  All information regarding the renaming process can be found on the Woodson High School Renaming website. I want to thank all the families, students, and alumni who engaged in this renaming process and for their thoughtful feedback. We are looking forward to the 2024 dedication ceremony where we can formally celebrate our new, inspirational namesake!

Starting on Monday, November 13, students will be able to receive an appointment pass and go see teachers during return periods to get extra help, retake a test, or other academic reasons. This change was advocated for by students, families, and our department chairs.  I  especially want to thank Kelsey Treague, Kate Wright, Lauren Kinne, Kathy Marcos, Katherine Stransky, Valerie Silver, Melinda Conner, and Kathy Martin for working extremely hard to plan for this change and train our school.

Tomorrow, we have teams competing in so many state competitions, it is impossible to attend them all!  Our Field Hockey Team, Volleyball Team, Girls Cross Country Team, as well as a member of our boys cross country team are all competing for either a state title, or in a state tournament.  Please look directly below this message for all the times and locations. We are just so proud!

Check out our student recognition page, which we post at the top of the Woodson Weekly.  This week we are celebrating our volleyball team’s regional title, our athletes that participated in national signing day, and our four seniors that were selected for the 2023 VA Senior Honor Choir

We hope to see you out at one of the several state competitions this weekend!

Mr. Greata
Acting Principal

5. Help Us Thank Woodson Teachers and Staff

The PTSO invites all Woodson families to celebrate and recognize our wonderful teachers and staff this holiday season.

High School isn’t the same as elementary school where we had organized gift-giving and room parents. Please take time throughout the school year, and especially now in the holiday season, to recognize and thank the educators and support professionals that work with our children. Simple notes of appreciation, emails of gratitude and letters in support of teachers, counselors, principal, and/or support staff have enormous, meaningful impact.

Additionally, Woodson PTSO is collecting gift cards to raffle at the Annual Holiday Party for the Teachers and Staff on Monday, December 11th.  Parents, families, and students are invited to send in donated gift cards to the main office addressed to Alexa Pugnetti. If you would prefer to donate a gift item, instead of gift cards, that would also be accepted and appreciated.

We kindly ask that we receive all donations by Wednesday, December 6th.  Please contact Alexa Pugnetti at alpugnetti@fcps.edu for more information.

Thank You Woodson Psychologists!

November 6-10 is National School Psychology Week. FCPS psychologists provide mental health services that build resilience, life competencies, and good citizenship. Thank you to Woodson's Psychologists Ryan Dickerson, Risha Lamba and Blakely Mulder!
