NEW News
FCPS CARES winners for July/August 2023, Mr. Smith (Director of Student Activities) and Mr. Osei Akrasi (Building Supervisor).
1. Message from Mr. Greata
Dear Woodson Community,
Throughout this week I have found inspiration and encouragement both from students and staff that exemplify our school spirit and pursuit of excellence. A defining characteristic of our school is the supportive culture that is strongest in times of challenge. No matter what we face, we take care of each other!
We had the opportunity to celebrate Paul Osei Akrasi and Blair Smith, who set an example of this caring character each and every day. They received the FCPS CARES of the Month Award specifically for their quick response to a colleague in need of emergency services. Thanks to them, our colleague is fully recovered and back here at Woodson!
Our entire administrative team was able to spend time with leaders of the Student Government Association, the Superintendent's Advisory Committee, the SPIRIT Council, and the Equity Ambassadors (SEALS) on Thursday. As they shared the huge initiatives that each group was working on, we all started to see opportunities for collaboration and synergy. Leveraging these opportunities will help us strengthen our community and ensure that we are working in concert to be inclusive and supportive of all students. Their commitment to our shared values and the well-being of each other was an inspiration to our entire team!
Our students continue to excel on the academic front as well. This week we welcomed 167 new members to the Woodson Chapter of the National Honor Society! That is simple incredible and I am so thankful to Andy Austin and Eileen Oviatt for their tireless efforts in coordinating and executing the application and selection process.
You might have seen one of our students on the local news this week. A huge shout out to Heman Bekele, who has won The 3M Young Scientist Challenge for inventing a soap that can prevent and cure cancer. What an unbelievable accomplishment!
We are looking forward to coming together as a community next week for our Homecoming activities, including our Spirit Week, pep rally, parade, pig out, football game, and dance! Our students have worked tirelessly to prepare for this amazing week and we hope to see everyone at the game. For more specific info, see item #2 below.
We have also created a new student and group recognition webpage on our Woodson website, where we will continue to add accolades for all to see. Visit the webpage here
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend,
Mr. Greata Acting Principal WoodsonConnect@fcps.edu
