Annandale Community Insider - June 4

Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

As I reflect on this past year and how we have supported our students, I am so proud of the work we have done to collectively hold high standards and help them reach their goals. These last several weeks running up to SOLs, IB exams, and tomorrow, graduation, have highlighted the ways we work together as a school to support our students’ needs. This support doesn’t just come from students’ teachers, but all staff members at Annandale High School in partnership with families. Thank you for all you do to support us and to support your student.

On Monday, we will host graduation at 9:00am on our stadium field. I am excited to see all of our families and distinguished guests, and to celebrate our seniors on this momentous occasion. The ceremony will be livestreamed and available for viewing at this link: tinyurl.com/Annandale2023. In addition, copies of the recording are also available for purchase

For students in grades 9-11, this day will be asynchronous. Students should log on to Schoology to complete the school-wide lesson. They can use the remainder of this day to study for exams and catch up on missing assignments. There will be no in-person or synchronous virtual classes.

Next week is our last week of classes. The following week students will take their final exams. Final exams are worth 10% of a student’s final grade in the class and can only serve to improve the grade. That means students have nothing to lose, and everything to gain by preparing for, and taking their final exam.

Our Atoms Agreement of Determination means that we do our best and we try, even when things are hard. To that end, I encourage students to show determination by taking full advantage of their time this week to ask their teachers for help. If a student needs help, or doesn’t know where to start, I encourage them to work with their teacher. They can also get help from a live tutor online for free using Tutor.com

Have a great week, Atom Nation. As always, reach out with questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Finish Strong!

End of Year Attendance Requirements: The last day of school for underclass students is Friday, June 16. While SOL testing is coming to an end, there is still much going on in our classrooms. Teachers and teams are continuing to plan high quality instruction that will prepare students to be successful not only on final exams, but in the coming years. In some cases, students are working on certifications or other requirements for graduation. All students are expected to attend school each day to complete these activities and finish the year strong.

The week of June 12-16, school is held from 8:10am-11:25pm. During this time, students will complete their end of course exams. These culminating activities assess students’ mastery of the standards and skills they have been learning throughout the year.

Purpose of Final Exams: According to FCPS policy, “a final examination or appropriate culminating activity, such as a presentation of learning (POL) will be given in all high school courses and must be based on the standards listed in the Program of Studies or other designated curriculum.” At Annandale, the purpose of final exams is to assess students’ mastery of the standards and skills they have been learning throughout the year. Some examples of final exams could be SOL-like progress monitoring assessments, culminating projects, reflective writing, or other demonstrations of learning. Our teachers work together in teams to develop a common final exam that students across the team will take.

Participation Expectations: According to FCPS policy, all students are expected to participate in a final exam for every course, regardless of SOL results. A student who is absent from the final examination or activity will receive a score of "missing" which is equivalent to a 50%.

Approach to Grading Final Exams: At Annandale, final exams are worth 10% of a students’ final grade. According to FCPS policy. Unlike other assessments, students will not have an opportunity to retake a final exam. This year, a student’s score on a final exam can only serve to improve the final grade. If the final exam grade does not improve the final grade in the course, it will be excluded in the gradebook.
