Annandale Students, Families, and Community:
This week is Atom Nation’s annual Inclusion Revolution week! During this time, our vision that “we find strength in diversity and foster belonging” is on full display. Students and staff are encouraged to show their spirit and support inclusion throughout the week. W4 (advisory) classes will compete to see which class demonstrates the most spirit. See all of the creativity and community building on Twitter by searching the hashtag #AtomNation!
The end of the week brings some of my favorite events of the year, starting with our FanQuest pep rally on Thursday. FanQuest is an event that promotes inclusion and respect for students with disabilities. During W4, students will attend the Pep Rally where they will cheer on our Special Olympics basketball team as they showcase their skills in a game against the Lewis Lancers. This is a unique opportunity for our Special Olympics athletes to experience a real game day atmosphere in front of their peers. Over the past few weeks, our Special Olympics team has been fundraising through our first ever “Pie the Admin” contest. During lunch, students (and staff) have had the opportunity to donate to our Special Olympics program, voting for the administrator they would like to see get “pied.” The pep rally will culminate with the “winning” administrator being pied in the face (and so far, for some reason, I seem to be in the lead!)
After school on Friday, we will host our annual Just World Festival beginning at 4:00pm, followed by Heritage Night beginning at 7:00pm. This year's theme for the Just World festival is "Belonging." The festival aims to inspire youth to view themselves as not only a part of their local community, but a global one as well.
The evening will conclude with our annual Heritage Night performance. This Annandale tradition is an opportunity for our students to showcase their culture through music, dance, fashion, and more. Tickets are only available for pre-purchase through March 8. The cost is $5. This event has been incredibly popular in the past, so we highly recommend pre-purchasing a ticket to ensure a spot at this incredible performance! No tickets will be sold at the door!
Finally, in addition to the Inclusion Revolution week events, we will also begin two programs focused on supporting students in preparation for end of year testing. PRIDE Time 4.0 will begin on Tuesday, March 7. Students can view their new PRIDE Time class in SIS StudentVue. On Wednesday, March 8, our second round of After School Academic Program (ASAP) will begin. On Monday or Tuesday, students will receive a letter from their teacher if they have been selected for ASAP. The letter will include their ASAP day, subject, and teacher assignment. Students must arrive at their teacher’s classroom at 3:10pm with necessary supplies and stay until 4:10pm. Buses are available to take students home at 4:45pm. Students also received this information in an email sent on Friday, March 4. In addition, parents will receive an email and an automated phone call if their student has been selected for ASAP.
Have a great week, Atom Nation. As always, reach out with questions.

We want to educate the community about global and environmental issues, fair trade, human rights, equality, and most importantly, social action. The Heritage Night performance will take place directly after the festival starting at 7pm and is another opportunity for Annandale students to showcase their culture through music, dance, fashion, and more. Awesome Atoms!
Students Participate in UVA Women in STEM Program: This Thursday, four Annandale students had the opporutnity to tour the University of Virginia campus and visit a chemistry lab. The visit was organized by a former Atom and ESOL alumni, Qianqian Shao, who is working on her Ph.D. The students learned about Qianqian’s research project, which is focused on identifying MHC class I phosphopeptides as a potential neoantigen for vaccines against a variety of cancers and viruses. The visit to the chemistry lab was followed by a full campus tour including the Chemistry Department, Clark Library, the Rotunda, and more. The ESOL department is appreciative of our former students reaching out to support other first-generation immigrants interested in science.
