FCPS Region 4 Outstanding Secondary Teacher

Congratulations to Gayle Thayer, Liberty Middle School's Foreign Language Teacher for winning Region 4 Outstanding Secondary Teacher!

National Junior Honor Society at Liberty Middle School

We are excited to announce the return of our chapter of National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). The pillars of NJHS are Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character, and Citizenship. We have many Lions who have demonstrated those traits throughout their time at LMS and we want to recognize them.

Eligible students and their families will be contacted directly by our sponsors and may choose to apply if they would like to be a part of our chapter this year. Eligibility is determined by the following criteria:

-Scholarship evidenced by a 3.5 GPA or higher at LMS

-Citizenship and Character evidenced by behavior demonstrated is in accordance with LMS Honor Code and the FCPS Students Rights & Responsibilities and by participation in restorative actions when disciplinary actions have been necessary.

Once these students and their families have been contacted, the students will have the opportunity to apply and provide evidence of their Service and Leadership, in addition to the pillars of Scholarship, Citizenship, and Character that determined their initial eligibility.

Current 8th grade students will be recognized at our induction ceremony at the end of the school year for the demonstration of NJHS’ five pillars throughout their time at LMS.

Current 7th grade students will be recognized at our Induction Ceremony at the end of the school year and will continue their membership into the 2023-24 school year, provided they maintain their demonstration of those five pillars.

Please contact Bryan Case (bgcase@fcps.edu) with any questions you may have and we look forward to recognizing these students who have done a commendable job of Lifting the Lions while they have been at LMS.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Fieldtrip

On Tuesday, February 28, Liberty MS  will be taking a group of 7th grade students to visit Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.   This is an opportunity for students who may choose to apply to Thomas Jefferson as 8th graders to see the school, visit several science labs, and enjoy a presentation in the planetarium.

7th graders interested in applying to Thomas Jefferson should be enrolled in Math 7 honors or higher, Science 7 honors, and one other honors course (English, Civics, or identified as a “Young Scholar”).

If your child is in 7th grade, meets the eligibility requirements and is interested in attending the field trip to Thomas Jefferson High School, please fill out the TJ Field Trip Interest Form linked here, no later than February 3rd.

We will likely have more students interested in attending the field trip than we have capacity.  If this is the case, we will randomly select students who meet the eligibility criteria and have the field trip materials turned in on time.

To read more about the Young Scholars model, please use the QR code at the bottom of this letter to visit: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics/k-6advanced-academics/young-scholars-k-12.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email Meg Dombro at mddombro@fcps.edu or call 703-988-8100

School Attendance Goals!

Welcome back! As we return to school for the new year, listed below are some of the ways parents can help their children create healthy routines and habits of getting to school on time every day:

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? View this morning checklist, available in English or Spanish.)
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

Bus Notes:

If your student is interested in riding the bus home with a friend, no problem! We need a note from each parent, one for the student riding the alternate bus and one from the other parent approving another student to come to their house after school. Each note needs to be brought to the main office at the beginning of the school day and a bus pass will be available for the student riding the alternate bus at the end of the school day.

Bus notes are no longer accepted by email. We need a note bought to the main office by each student at the beginning of the day.

Picking Your Student Up Early?

We ask that you send your student in with a note stating what time they will be picked up and by who. That way, we can make your student a pass for five minutes before the time on the note and they can meet you here in the office and after verifying your ID you will be all set to go. Has the day already started, and you need to pick up your student? No problem. You’ll come to entrance number 1 for the main office, show your ID and we will call your student down to leave.

Liberty PTA
