Nine of our Lees Corner strings players participated in the Area Orchestra event at Franklin Middle School last Saturday. Our musicians got to meet and make friends with musicians from other elementary schools in the Franklin and Rachel Carson pyramids as well as play with middle school and high school level musicians. Does Your Child Refuse to Go to School?
Each year, nearly 5% of youth experience school refusal. This refers to a child refusing to go to school on a regular basis or remain in school throughout the day due to significant emotional distress. School refusal includes kindergarten students with relatively mild separation anxiety and more severe cases where a student misses weeks or months of school because of debilitating anxiety or depression. Read how to get your child back to school in the Healthy Minds Blog or learn more about attendance policies.

Introducing our Newest Staff Member
I want to take a moment to introduce myself to all the staff, parents, and guardians. I am Andrea Ramalheira, I am the new Parent Liaison at Lees Corner. I speak both English and Spanish, and my role is to provide every family with virtual or in-person assistance and support.
As you know, our school system is very diverse, and every family has a different story and needs. So, to communicate and effectively help our diverse families better, I am here to facilitate conversations that lead to a more cooperative working relationship between schools, families, and our community.
There are times when parents don’t always feel comfortable communicating their questions or concerns to the teachers or the school administration – I want to be the bridge between parents and our school. I will also focus on informing parents and guardians on how they can get involved and stay informed when it comes to their children’s education. This is key! because when parents are involved, students thrive and have a more successful educational journey.
In other words, I’m here to help! Here is a community newsletter I created with links to information for parents from parenting classes to help with taxes.
I am very excited to be part of the Lees Corner ES Family. Please reach out if you have any questions or if you just want to say hi.
Thank you for your time,
Andrea Ramalheira

Future Planning for Elementary and Middle School Students with Disabilities (ES, MS)
It’s never too early or too late to start preparing for your future. FCPS wants to help you start planning for a successful transition from school to life as a young adult. Ensuring postsecondary success of our students with disabilities is dependent on what is known as transition planning. Please join CTS and other support service personnel for an evening focused on planning for the future. You will have the opportunity to meet and ask questions of representatives from CTS programs and services for students with disabilities, short- and long-term postsecondary supports, employment and postsecondary education considerations, and Supported Decision Making, and student self-determination as an evidence-based predictor of post school success. This event also includes a student/parent panel where members describe their firsthand experiences as they navigated Fairfax County Public Schools and planning for their child’s future. A questions/answer session will follow.
