Majors achieve and thrive together with purpose and pride!

International Night pic

International Night was a wonderful celebration of the rich diversity at Mount Vernon High School.

Good Morning Major Families,

I hope you all enjoyed the three day weekend and had time to reflect on the sacrifices of our fallen soldiers during this Memorial Day.  We owe so much to our military and their families for protecting us and making so many sacrifices on our behalf.

It is hard to believe that we are in our last 9 days of school, but that is our reality.  I am incredibly proud of the work of our students and staff after what has been such a tumultuous year, but I attribute that to our community being MAJORSTRONG!

We celebrated so much this past week academically, in athletics and performing arts.  I am always in awe of the gifts and talents of our students and so very proud.  Over the next two weeks, our students will be involved in preparing for graduation festivities, celebrating accomplishments during the spring sports and underclassmen awards ceremonies, and finishing the year with final examinations.  As I shared with students, it is one thing to start strong, but finishing strong, especially when times are tough, shows our tenacity and resilience.

Please review the modified schedule below and plan accordingly to ensure you are working with your students to prepare for their final exams.  Also, please note that beginning June 6th, MVHS will move to a half day schedule for underclassmen.  On June 7, 2022,  9-11th graders will have an asynchronous day because the building will be closed for our MVHS Graduation.

We will also celebrate the culmination of this school year with a “Wellness Day” on the last day of school with activities such as karaoke, kickball, board games, chalk art and yoga.  It will be a great time for all.

Finally, if you haven’t already, please take a moment to complete this survey to help us continue to grow.  We value your feedback and will use it as we plan for the future.

With Major Pride,

Principal Rogers

Meet our New Administrators

Mrs. Lashonda Reed

Administrator for Subschool 2025

Official Start Date: 5/30/22

Special Education - Cat A

Social Studies

Greetings Majors! My name is Lashonda Reed, but you can call me Shon, and I am so excited to be joining the Mount Vernon family!

Brief Background: I was born and raised in Rochester, New York.  In 2001, I followed my Marine husband to the Northern Virginia area, and we loved the area so much that we never left. I currently live in Fredericksburg, VA with my now Civilian Marine husband and 3 adult children.  As a career switcher, I entered the field of education in 2010 and obtained my Master’s in Special Education General Curriculum K-12 in 2012 and my Education Leadership Certification in 2016, both from the University of Mary Washington. I previously served the Stafford County and Fauquier County communities as a LD Teacher, Special Education Department Chair, and Assistant Principal, all at the high school level.  By the end of the 2020-21 school year, I needed a change of pace, so I decided to return to the classroom.  Shortly after making this decision, I accepted a LD Teacher position with the FCPS Virtual Program. With the Virtual Program concluding at the end of this school year, I started my FCPS job search to find a new home and although I was not explicitly looking for AP positions, when I saw the Mount Vernon AP opening, I was inspired to apply, and the rest is history!

Personal and/or fun facts you’re willing to share: I enjoy the freedoms of having grown children, traveling, dating my husband, scrapbooking, and spending cool nights sitting around my backyard fire pit.

Why you’re excited to join the MVHS Family:As a Virtual Program Teacher, I was able to work with students, staff, and parents from all over the county; however, MVHS stood out from all the rest.  With positive insight from all stakeholder perspectives, I could not pass on the opportunity to be a part of the MVHS family and, I am so honored that the family saw it fit to welcome me in with open arms!

Mr. Brian Murphy

Director of Student Activities

Official Start Date: 5/30/22

Health and Physical Education

Custodians

I come to Mount Vernon after being at Justice High School for the last 5 years.  During that time I taught Geometry, was the Math Department chair,  and coached varsity football.  Prior to that I was at West Covina High School in California for 17 years, where I taught Geometry, was the Athletic Director for 14 years and coached varsity football for 17 years and varsity baseball for 7 years.  I have three boys, a senior and a freshman at Oakton, and a 7th grader at Rachel Carson.  My wife is a clinical director for the emergency department at Inova Fairfax.  I am extremely proud of all 4 of them.  I graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1995 with a BS in Accounting and from Azusa Pacific University in 2004 with a Masters in Education Administration.   I look forward to joining the team at Mount Vernon as the new Director of Student Activities.

MAJOR PRIDE!

Congratulations to Mark Wilson, who will be presented with his Silver Medal by Congressman Beyer Jr on 1 June 2022.  Mark joined the United States Congress’ only non-profit and highest honor for youth civilians in January 2020 right before the pandemic hit.  He was required to put hundreds of hours into Physical Fitness, Voluntary Public Service, and Personal Development. Mark also was required to go on an expedition which he had to independently design, schedule, execute, and summarize any lessons learned.

Kailah Augustine received a “Special Mention” at the Brandon Victor Dixon Awards for her performance in Matilda.  Check it out here.

Congratulations to our Fine and Performance Department

This past week our Choral, Orchestra and Band students performed for a week of Spring Concerts.  Each performance was special, our seniors were celebrated and music beautifully rang out of the Andrew Lee Pauley Theater.  On Wednesday, May 25, 2022 our orchestra students premiered their commissioned piece Free Fall to thunderous applause in front of the composer Selena Ryan who was flown in from Arizona thanks to a generous anonymous benefactor.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Art Program partnered with our orchestra program to bring the composition to life.  The students created stream-of-consciousness painting, drawing and sculpting sessions while listening to the digital mockup of free fall.  The thematic art installation and interactive gallery also premiered on May 25th.   Congratulations to all involved in this inspirational collaboration. It was a wonderful evening
