Annandale Students, Parents and Community:

This week our students enjoyed success both inside and outside of the classroom. The weather was perfect as several of our athletic teams’ celebrated "Senior Nights." I had the opportunity to attend these events and congratulate our senior athletes. It was clear through my interactions with students, parents and coaches how important the past several months of athletics have been, especially for our seniors.

Our boys and girls soccer teams play in the first round of the district championship at Falls Church High School on Monday. In addition, our Baseball and Softball teams won on Friday night and will now advance to the district semifinals on Tuesday. See detailed athletic schedule below.

Participation in extracurricular activities has always played an important role in the development of our students. This summer, Annandale High School will host a series of Summer Sports Camps for students in grades 2-9. Please help us spread the word to friends, family and neighbors!

As we quickly approach the end of the school year, we are doing much to support our students with getting over the finish line. Students have completed their first attempts at Math, Science, and Reading SOLs and this is the final week of IB testing. Teachers are working with students who, with additional support, have the opportunity to retake and pass. They are targeting students’ needs through PRIDE Time, ASAP, and small-group instruction during every period. Our MTSS teams, counselors, and coaches are combing through every senior to ensure they have the course verifications and credits they need to graduate.

Finally, this is a big week for the class of 2022. Seniors will begin taking their final exams on Wednesday and Thursday. The bell schedule will remain the same, however seniors will be dismissed after the last exam period. There will be no exams on Friday, so seniors can prepare for Prom that evening. For the latest Class of 2022 information, check out the “Senior Page” on the AHS Student Portal.

Have a great week, Atom Nation. As always, reach out with any questions.

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Awesome Atoms!

Student Services Delivers Junior Programing: This past Thursday, our counseling team conducted our Junior Program, during which our juniors were able to attend an information session of their choosing based on their post-high school plans. Our College 101 session was streamed virtually for students to get advice on the college search process, understand the nuances of financial aid, and begin preparing for college applications. Our NOVA session covered the benefits of community college, how students can engage with NOVA now, and the relationship between NOVA and four-year universities. Finally, we had a variety of representatives from the military and work apprenticeships to present the options they can provide to students as they think about their future. Thank you to all the counselors and presenters for supporting our students as they begin to think about life after Annandale!

Project Evidence

10th Grade Students Demonstrate Skills via Middle Years Program Personal Project: As part of our work as an MYP school, each year our 10th graders complete a personal project through their English classes. For their Personal Project, students select a topic they are interested in learning how to do, make, create, develop, or otherwise pursue, journal about this experience, and write a report. The personal project formally assesses students' approaches to learning skills for self-management, research, communication, critical and creative thinking, and collaboration.

Our current 10th graders have completed their projects and presented them to their classes, and over 40 students were selected by their classmates and teachers to showcase their projects to our 9th graders. This is an opportunity for our 10th grade students to celebrate and showcase their success. Additionally, this opportunity will give 9th graders a preview of the personal project and more information about MYP at Annandale.

Each week we will feature some of our students’ projects through the Insider. Today’s personal project feature is Melanie Lam, in Bill Maglisceau’s class. Melanie’s essential question was, “How can I create a piece of apparel with my mom and incorporate both her and my style?” She chose this topic because she likes art. Over the course of the project, Melanie learned how to sew. Not only was Melanie’s product beautiful, she did an incredible job setting goals, describing her process, and reflecting on what she learned along the way. Check out what Melanie made here!
