Community Meeting

As our school transitions to our new name, Mosaic Elementary School, members from the Equity and Culturally Responsiveness (ECR) team, in partnership with our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) will provide an opportunity for our staff and families to engage in a community conversation. Our time together will reflect our goal of affirming the multiple identities of the students, staff, and families we serve. Please join us on April 20, 2021 from 6:30 to 7:30 virtually on BBCU.

SOL Testing: Right to Refuse

Parents/guardians have the right to refuse SOL assessments if they have concerns about participation related to the pandemic, including health, social-emotional, and instructional time concerns for hybrid and virtual students.

As we prepare for spring assessments, we need to collect information about your intentions for your children in grades 3-6 at Mosby Woods for the spring SOL tests. Please complete this online Google intent form by Friday, April 9https://forms.gle/oYX1YmCc3XqE2fLx6

The schedule for testing and more information about this year's SOLs can be found on our website.

Kiss and Ride Guidelines

In an effort to help expedite our Kiss and Ride we ask that you place a sheet of paper on the passenger side of the dashboard with the name(s) of the student(s) you are picking up and the grade level.

As a reminder:  Our Kiss and Ride is one lane only, passing is not permitted, parents should remain in the vehicle at all times, and students should enter and exit on the passenger side.  Thank you for your cooperation as we strive to make our Kiss and Ride as safe and efficient as possible.

Technology Tips and Tricks

Important: Students should clear the cache in Chrome and restart their FCPS laptops. Please do this once a week to make sure all websites are working properly and all updates are installed.

Allergy Season and COVID-19 Protocols

Allergy season has arrived.  If your child suffers from seasonal allergies, parents must provide/update their child’s Health Information Form and send to Mr. Redford at jpredford@fcps.edu. Several of the COVID-19 symptoms are also seasonal allergy symptoms and identifying your child’s known seasonal allergy symptoms will help us ensure the continued health and wellness of our students and staff. If your child displays any unexplained or unidentified symptoms listed here, your child will be sent to the Care Room and will be sent home. It will be your responsibility to contact your pediatrician to complete a Sick Student Notification form prior to their reentry to MWES.

Thank you for your diligence screening your child each morning to ensure they are 100% well before sending them to school.  If they are not well, please keep them virtual for the safety of their classmates and staff members.  They will be able to log in and receive the same instruction as they would have in-person.

WordMasters Challenge

A student representing Mosby Woods Elementary recently received a perfect score in the second of three meets in this year’s WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 125,000 students annually.

Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, fourth grader Rohan Dash earned a perfect score of 20 on the challenge. Nationally, only 101 fourth graders achieved this result. Other students from Mosby Woods Elementary who achieved outstanding results in the meet include fifth graders Sam Leitenberg and Vivian Yu.

The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge™ by their classroom teachers.

Congratulations, Mustangs!

Diversity in STEM

The PTSA Diversity Committee of the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology will hold its next Diversity in STEM Talk in April! This series is especially for elementary and middle school students in grades 4-8.

Join us Monday, April 12, at 6 p.m. to hear from Julie Ann Sosa, MD, Leon Goldman MD Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Sosa was born in Montreal and raised in upstate New York. She received her AB at Princeton, MA at Oxford, and MD at Johns Hopkins, where she also completed the Halsted residency in general surgery and a fellowship. She previously practiced medicine and taught at Duke University Medical School and Yale University Medical School. She is published in numerous medical journals and books. Dr. Sosa’s research interests include outcomes research, health care delivery, hyperparathyroidism, and thyroid cancer, with a focus on clinical trials. Join us to hear more about a career in medicine and her experience as a surgeon, professor, and now administrator in a large teaching hospital.

  • What sparked her interest in medicine?
  • What does she enjoy most about practicing medicine?
  • What would she recommend to students who want to pursue a medical career?
  • What else would you like to know?
