Woodburn News - September 18, 2020

Dear Woodburn Families,

We are celebrating a successful second week of school.  Thank you for showing your school spirit all week and for joining us at Back to School Night.  If you missed Back to School Night you can find presentations from the event on your child's Blackboard 24/7 page.

As we head into week three we continue to stay focused on student access, community building, creating engaging learning experiences and participation.  We are noticing that some students are hesitant to participate using the microphone and some do not want to show their face.  We will not be forcing students to show their faces and know it will take time for students to feel comfortable. We hope you might be able to support us with this and have a conversation with your child at home about what participation style is most comfortable for them. If you notice that your child is struggling with this and would like additional support please do not hesitate to reach out to us or our counseling team.  It is a team effort!

As a reminder, Mondays look a little different and we have provided log in information below.  Attendance is taken on Mondays and we ask that all students remain logged into their grade level link between 9 am and 12 pm.

Thank you for your ongoing support.  We hope to see many of you at our PTA meeting next week.

Sincerely,

Katy Richman, Principal

Bridget Louder, Assistant Principal

Mondays at Woodburn

Monday Morning Meetings for grades 1-6 will be hosted on a full grade level link in Blackboard 24-7. This is different from their classroom link they received in Gmail. The purpose is to allow for community building among the grade level and for students to work with other adults in that time. Please follow these directions for accessing Monday Morning Meetings!

We’ve also created a video in ENGLISH and SPANISH with directions!

Kindergarten students will continue to log into their regular link on Mondays!

Positivity Project (P2) for Families!

As a family, explore the P2 character strength of the week!  Next week’s character strength is CURIOSITY.  Click this link P2 for families to access to the character card, a quote, video and 3 questions 😊  The password is P2.

Principal Chats

Katy and Bridget want to connect with you!  They will be hosting monthly Principal Chats to answer any questions you might have and seek your feedback about current and upcoming school matters.  Their first Principal Chat will be held on October 6th.  A meeting link will be sent in the coming weeks.

Parent Liaison Office Hours

Our amazing parent liaison, Robyn Fernandez, will continue to connect with families this year. She will be hosting weekly office hours to start the year.  Her first meeting will be held on September 29th from 3:00-3:45.  A link to this meeting and meeting topics will be shared in the coming weeks.

Woodburn's Equity Lead

Woodburn is committed to providing equitable learning experiences for all students.  To support our work we have a designated Equity Lead.  Melissa Green has served in this role for the past two years and will support Woodburn in this role again this year.  Melissa has over 12 years of experience in public education in an elementary setting.  As an Equity Lead she partners with principals to inform practices.  She promotes equitable opportunities in the school setting and will be engaging with our community to celebrate our diversity and ensure all voices are heard.  Melissa serves as the lead on our Equity Committee and facilitates professional development about topics related to this work.  Melissa is also an award winning public speaker and writer.

Title I Parent Representative Needed

We are still looking for two parents to serve on the Title I Parent Advisory Committee - a representative and an alternate. More information about this opportunity can be found here.  Please email Katy at kjrichman@fcps.edu if you are interested in serving in one of these roles.
