A Note from Dr. Goodloe
Dear Rocky Run Families,
I am hoping you and all of your loved ones are well and you are taking good care during this unique time in our lives.
I have been encouraged by the students and families who have reached out to me and shared some of their activities including how they are staying active, books they are reading, and shared experiences with their families. I am enjoying have all three of my kids home, being outside, and a bit of a slower schedule. I miss our students and teachers and being at Rocky Run MS tremendously!

Resources for you and your family
Here are a few quick links to resources from FCPS:
Positivity Project & Common Sense Media
To maintain momentum with our Positivity Project and Common Sense Media lessons, we are going to share the weekly lesson content in Google Classroom and in FCPS 24-7 Learning.
In adherence with current FCPS guidelines on distance learning, these lessons are not required to be completed, but they are an excellent opportunity for families to communicate about using tech in positive, creative, and powerful ways.
Last Week's Lesson
Upstanders and Allies: Taking Action Against Cyberbullying: This lesson is focused on cyberbullying, empathy, and our role in addressing cyberbullying and other mean online behavior.
We connected this lesson to the P2 Topic of Social Intelligence: You are aware of other people’s thoughts and feelings. You understand why they do things.
Here are some tools that you can use as a family to address this topic at home.
Looking Ahead!
Next week, we will get caught up and share the following lesson content in FCPS 24-7 Learning and in Google Classroom.
- “This Just In” Spotting Fake News (P2 Character Trait: Love of Learning)
- The 4 Factors of Fair Use (P2 Character Trait: Fairness)
All FCPS students have access to district-purchased ebooks and audiobooks through Destiny Discover and MackinVIA. Students can read ebooks and listen to audiobooks on the MackinVIA website or download the MackinVIA app to any device, using the blue Fairfax County button, NOT the Follett sign in.
Explore the Destiny Discover library catalog to find FCPS-purchased ebooks and audiobooks. Students also have access using the desktop icon on their school-issued laptop. For more information on how to use and access ebooks and audiobooks, use these tutorials found on the Library Google Site (accessed with a student's fcpsschools account).
Finally, for even more titles, the Fairfax County Public Library offers a wide selection of ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines. If you do not have a library card, sign up for one on their website and gain instant access to these digital resources and more!
Feel free to contact Ms. Grover (ragrover@fcps.edu) or Ms. Bickford (elbickford@fcps.edu) with any questions related to e-reading.
Course Selections for Next Year
All 7th and 8th grade students course selection process has been completed for next year. Everyone had a chance to meet with their counselor individually to discuss their course selections. Parents can review their child’s selections by logging into SIS ParentVUE and clicking “Course Requests” on the left. Please note that it requires a firm commitment and staffing is based on students' course selections. Contact your child counselor for any questions. If you want to make a request to change, email your child's counselor as soon as possible. Also, your child's teachers are great resources if you have any questions regarding core subjects and/or intervention courses.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Academic Advising for Next Year
-
Music Courses - Students who have signed up for music courses (Band, Orchestra and Chorus) are placed in the beginning level course at the moment. Their placement will be determined after the audition. Students will receive more information from their music teachers. Audition format and timing will depend on FCPS closure status.
-
World Languages (high school credit bearing) - World Language courses are not a required course in Middle School. The courses are very rigorous and are ideal for students who have strong work habits. They must be on grade level or above for Reading and Math in order to be successful in class. Rocky Run offers level 1 and level 2 - French, Latin and Spanish courses.
-
Intervention Courses - You may see some of our intervention courses in your child's course request. Rocky Run offers Read 180, Action Literacy, Reading 7/8, Responsive Writing, PowerMath 7/8 and Strategies for Success. Placement is based on your teachers input and their performance data. If you have questions regarding the course, please contact your child's counselor. For questions regarding the placement recommendation, contact your child's teacher and include his/her counselor in your email.

Shifting Gears/ 7th Grade Orientation: We used to offer a great summer transition program called "Shifting Gears" for our rising 7th grade students; however, we are not able to offer it this year due to the building renovation. We WILL have a 7th Grade Orientation Program in August and more information will be sent out in June. The renovation is projected to be done by August 2020. So, students will be enjoying the brand new building next year!
Under Construction: Renovation News
- Construction is ongoing during the closure as of 3/20/2020.
- Construction of the new library (carpet and finishes are being installed), electives wing, and main office addition is progressing on schedule. We expect to access the new library and main office in late March / early April.
- We are planning for classroom moves from Ramsville (trailers) into new spaces over spring vacation. The Social Studies, English 7 and World Languages departments will all move inside to new classrooms.
- We expect that our new digital marquee to be installed very soon - weather permitting!
Air Quality: During construction, questions about indoor air quality arise. The most recent air quality tests for March met or exceeded all standards. The air quality inside the building is monitored at least once per month. Please visit the Rocky Run website to review FAQs related to indoor air quality.
If you have specific questions about the renovation, please email them to Administrative Assistant, AJ Ries, ajries@fcps.edu or call the Rocky Run MS main office at 703-802-7700.
We will post updates, pictures, timelines, etc on this page on our website. This page will also be linked as a static announcement on our homepage as we move through the renovation process.
