SOL Testing Dates and Retake Permission Form
Grade 8 Writing SOL
Under Virginia Law students in grade 8 are required to take the English Writing Standards of Learning (SOL) test. The test has two components: multiple choice response and short paper response. Rocky Run students will take the assessment on the following dates:
- March 10- Short paper response
- March 11- Multiple choice response
Grades 7 and 8 Non-Writing SOL
In addition, the Virginia Department of Education requires students in grades 3-8 across the state to take the SOL tests. The table below shows the content area and dates when students at Rocky Run will take the assessments:
- May 7- English 8
- May 11- English 7
- May 13- Science 8
- May 18-21- Math Courses
- May 27- Civics
SOL Retakes - Parent Permission Form
As you know, the passing score is 400. Students who scored between 375 and 399 are allowed to retake the test. The retake window is June 4-8, 2020. Parent permission is required for any retesting of the grade level test.
- 8th Grade Parents - we mailed the permission form to all 8th grade parents via US mail this week. You also can access the form here. Please read, sign and return it to your child’s Rock Time teacher no later than April 1, 2020.
- 7th Grade Parents - you will receive the form via mail in late March for the Spring test.
SOL Testing and FCPSOn Devices
All Rocky Run students will be using their FCPSOn Devices for SOL testing. Please ensure your student’s laptop is working and that they have their power charger. Issues should be reported to the School Technology Team located in Room 147.
Computer health checks have been completed during all 8th grade English classes.
8th Grade Parents and Guardians:
All students taking an SOL test will need to bring a fully charged laptop and power charger with the exception of students who opted out and use their own device.

Failing to bring in a device on testing days could impact a student's ability to participate in testing on the scheduled SOL testing date.
