(Mrs. Nystrom, Ms. Jakubek, & Mr. Muha)
During the month of January, Kindergarten has been exploring body movements through Educational Gymnastics in PE class. They have practiced balancing on different body points, 1-4 points of balance, and holding for at least 3 seconds. They have moved at low, medium and high levels while doing animal walks, practiced rolling in at least 3 different ways (pencil, log, egg rolls) and demonstrated the 4 main gymnastics positions; layout, pike, straddle and tuck.
First grade has been practicing their mat skills in Educational Gymnastics during January. They have demonstrated maturing forms of gymnastics positions; layout, pike, straddle and tuck. First graders have practiced these positions in various gymnastics skills such as balancing, rolling, jumping and transferring their weight from their feet to their hands.
During the month of January second grade has demonstrated maturing forms of body control in PE’s Educational Gymnastics unit. They have performed the four basic floor skills in gymnastics; balances, rolls, jumps and weight transfers. They have practiced combining skills to create a mini gymnastics routine and are working on identifying muscles that help them balance and keep their movements in control.
Third graders have been engaged in our Educational Gymnastics unit in PE during the month of January. They have demonstrated the main gymnastics positions; layout, pike, straddle and tuck while standing, on the floor and as jumps. They have studied and practiced the skills of balancing for at least 5 seconds, rolling, traveling and transferring their weight from feet to hands. They can demonstrate multiple examples of each gymnastics skill and are working on putting them together to create a maturing gymnastics routine.
During the month of January in PE, fourth grade has been studying Educational Gymnastics. They have demonstrated the main gymnastics positions; layout, pike, straddle and tuck while standing, on the floor and as jumps. They have demonstrated their knowledge and understanding of floor gymnastics by performing a self-created routine for their teachers. Their routine consisted of at least one jump, roll, balance, and weight transfer. Ask them to perform it for you 😊
Fifth grade has been engaged in Educational Gymnastics in PE during the month of January. They have created and performed an educational gymnastics sequence consisting of a jump, roll, balance and weight transfer. They have been working on making their sequences flow smoothly with varying speed, direction changes and flow. These sequences have been performed for their teachers as a culminating grade for the unit.
During January in PE class, sixth grade has been studying Educational Gymnastics. They have been practicing the floor skills associated with gymnastics; balancing, rolling, traveling/jumping and transferring weight. They have created mature gymnastics routines demonstrating these skills and performed them for a grade. They have also been working on understanding the skill-related fitness components that relate to educational gymnastics; agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time and speed.
News from the Art Department:
(Mrs. Feeney & Ms. Medeiros)
This quarter in Art has been great!
Kindergarten has been busy in art. They painted their clay pots, made a slice of pizza collage, painted a snow man and just finished up a Monet inspired sponge painting. Next they will start paper weaving.
First grade started out the quarter painting their clay pumpkins, then worked on an animal’s face collage project. Currently they are creating beautiful family portrait paintings. The paintings are wonderful they are so proud and are almost done!
Second grade finished and painted their clay leaf tiles. They created a painting of a community on colorful hills, had a little time to design a ginger bread house and are currently working on a water color painting of a bird.
Third grade finished their Cultural clay tile. Then they worked on a family food collage and used a print making method to create a beautiful winter birch tree painting. Now they are working in oil pastels to make cakes.
Fourth grade painted their clay coil pots. They also made a collage about time and all its different meanings. Right now they are using oil pastels to make colorful landscapes.
Fifth grade made gargoyles out of clay. After clay they made landscape paper collages and drew animals in winter sweaters. Currently they are designing a stamp for a city, state or country.
Sixth grade made a favorite food out of clay they just finished painting their pieces. They also drew animals in winter sweaters. Right now they are working on a sunset silhouette project. Next will be a self-portrait using words to draw.
All students have had an amazing second quarter in art! Looking forward to continuing to create with them third quarter.
