2024-2025 Academy for New Directors of Special Education If your school division has employed a new special education director, please complete the Registration for the 2024-2025 Academy for New Directors of Special Education by June 30. A new Director of Special Education is defined as one who is new to the position and has not been a special education director in another local school division or was new after last year’s Academy.
New Mathematics Resources Released The new VDOE Mathematics Instructional Guides include three sections: Understanding the Standard, Skills in Practice, and Concepts and Connections. A Mathematics Instructional Guide FAQ Document (Word | PDF) has been developed to provide information about the purpose, structure, intended audience, and use of the Guides. A supplement to the Mathematics Instructional Guides, the Concepts and Connections Articulation Guide (Word | PDF) provides support in identifying concepts aligned Standards that articulate across grade levels or courses.
International Partnerships with Schools in France Our partners at the Académie de Reims in France are seeking Virginia schools to participate in shared student projects. The details of the project would be designed by the two collaborating schools on a topic of mutual interest. Interested schools can submit a profile detailing their interests for pairing with a school in our partner region in France. Current interest areas from our partner schools for the coming school year include history, traditions, biology, arts, math, geography, and more. New English Resources Released The first wave of supports for the 2024 English Standards of Learning have been posted. Understanding the Standards documents, Overview of Revisions narrated PowerPoints, Grade Band Side-by-Sides, and Progression charts are available. Reference the 2024 English Standards of Learning and VDOE Literacy Updates webpages for more details. Division leaders should work with English leaders, instructional coaches, and teachers to help plan for the implementation of the new Standards in 2024-2025.
Multisensory Structured Literacy Training- July 15-19 In order to continue support of local school divisions with their implementation of the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA), the VDOE is seeking K-8 special education teachers, general education teachers, literacy interventionists, and reading specialists who work directly with students with disabilities for more than 50 percent of the school day to participate in a Multisensory Structured Language Instruction Training. This professional development is based on the Orton-Gillingham instructional approach, which is direct and systematic to teaching language structure for reading remediation. Complete the Teacher Application by July 5. A recommendation from the applicant’s principal, written on school letterhead is required, and must be attached to the Teacher Application. VDOE Educator Talent Pool Recommendations-Due July 10 As part of VDOE’s ongoing efforts to elevate the great work of Virginia educators, the Department annually seeks recommendations from school leaders of distinguished teachers, principals, and specialists to maintain on file. These recommendations provide VDOE with the opportunity to elevate educators for membership on advisory committees, boards, and task forces, as well as candidates for recognition programs. Leaders are encouraged to learn more or submit their candidates by July 10.
Summer 2024 Webinars for Fine Arts Teachers and Instructional Leaders VDOE Fine Arts staff will host Summer 2024 VDOE Fine Arts Webinars to support new and veteran teachers in gaining foundational concepts and resources to plan standards-aligned instruction in the 2024-2025 school year. The most up-to-date resources and information will be shared for planning and leading instruction in the new school year. Call for Proposals: PreK-12 School Innovation Planning Grant Individual school divisions or consortia school divisions are eligible to submit proposals meeting the intent of the grant. Proposals may target one or more schools in each participating school division. The 2024 Appropriation Act has provided funding for up to five competitive planning grants to be awarded in fiscal year 2025, each not to exceed $50,000. Full details about this year’s application process and submission details can be found in the PreK-12 School Innovation Grant Call for Proposals. Interested applicants must apply by 4 p.m. on July 16.
Nominations for 2024-2025 CTE Curriculum Review Committees The Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education is accepting nominations for the 2024-2025 CTE curriculum review committees. School divisions may nominate a CTE teacher for any of the 39 committees, as outlined in the CTE Review/Development Committee Schedule. Approximately 12 applicants will be selected by the Superintendent of Public Instruction to serve on each committee. All nominees who wish to serve on a committee must complete the web-based application using the CTE Application Processing System. More information is available from Article 2024-22-193.

Teacher Residency Partnership Opportunity The Office of Apprenticeships is accepting proposals for a teacher residency partnership. This is between university teacher preparation programs and hard-to-staff school divisions to help improve teacher candidate training and retention for hard-to-staff schools.
