Executive Directive Number 5: Recognizing the Risks & Seizing the Opportunities of AI On September 20, Governor Youngkin issued Executive Directive Number 5, Recognizing the Risks and Seizing the Opportunities of Artificial Intelligence. In this order, the Governor outlined several steps for education, including: -VDOE will release guidelines for Artificial Intelligence (AI) use in K-12 public schools. The department is working with a variety of stakeholders to finalize this guidance and will release in the coming weeks. -VDOE providing uniform standards for AI use. These standards will be incorporated into the 2024 computer science Standards of Learning. -VDOE will examine uses for personalized tutoring. More information will be provided through our weekly newsletter updates as more information becomes available. -VDOE will support programming that will ensure students are prepared for future careers involving AI technologies. Updates on these components in the computer science standards, CTE pathways, and revisions to the industry recognized credentials will be forthcoming.
Write to Learn Conference The Shenandoah Valley Writing Project will hold its annual Write-to-Learn conference on the Shenandoah University campus on October 7. All K-12 teachers of any content are welcome. More details and registration are available online.
Virginia Children’s Engineering Convention 2024: Call for Presenters The Council focuses on providing teachers in grades PreK-5 professional development experiences that enable them to help children explore how people create, use, and control technology; and apply knowledge of mathematics, science, English, history and social science in solving problems associated with technology. Apply now for the Call for Presenters for the in-person convention in Williamsburg, February 22-23. Deadline is October 1.
Earth Science Week October 8-14 Earth Science Week will celebrate the theme "Geoscience Innovating for Earth and People." The coming year's event will emphasize the many ways that innovations in the geosciences are helping communities create healthier and increasingly sustainable lives, while accelerating environmental problem-solving around the world. Classroom activities and other resources are available for students to discover the Earth sciences and engage in responsible stewardship of the Earth.
Virginia Statewide LMS Credentials for Educators & Technology/Infrastructure Personnel Four credential opportunities are available, with two tracks for teachers and other education personnel and two tracks for technology/infrastructure personnel. Each will include a series of webinars and a brief online course. Participants who successfully complete a track will earn a certificate and digital badge worth five hours of professional learning. Free Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Workshop Series on African and African American History This free professional development series is designed to equip elementary, middle, and high school teachers with resources for the classroom and an enhanced understanding of the significant role Black people have played in the formation of the United States. Sessions support several new and existing Virginia History and Social Science SOLs. These interactive workshops will be held virtually at 7 p.m. on select dates from October through February by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and The Mariners’ Museum.
VCEE Professional Development Opportunities Discover the free fall professional development opportunities from the Virginia Council on Economic Education whether you teach elementary, middle, or high school. These comprehensive Institutes lead to a VCEE Certified Educator certification, offering a variety of workshops. Choose between in-person sessions or engaging online workshops.
Study Abroad Opportunities The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) provides more than 1,000 scholarships for U.S. high school students to study abroad for a few weeks, summer, or an academic year in more than 25 countries. These exchange programs prepare young Americans to succeed in the 21st century’s global economy by developing foreign language skills, increasing cross-cultural understanding, strengthening confidence and leadership capacity, and fostering new academic insights and ambitions. VCEE Bronze Level Virginia Personal Finance Teacher Fellowship Program Applications are now open for the Virginia Council on Economic Education Bronze Level Virginia Personal Finance Teacher Fellowship Program! This cohort of highly-qualified Personal Finance Teacher Fellows will offer personal finance professional development and resources to other teachers in their school, school division, and region. Applications are due by October 15.
Virginia Junior Academy of Science Symposium This is a virtual juried science symposium that includes authentic research experience for secondary school students in grades 7-12. Students who participate in the juried 2024 Annual Research Symposium may use the experience to meet one of the criteria needed to earn the VDOE STEM Seal or Seal for Excellence in Science and the Environment. VJAS is looking to recruit mentors and secondary school teachers who want their students to participate in a virtual long-term research project. Secondary science teachers interested in having a mentor work with their class need to register their schools by the January 15 deadline.
EL Conversations for Virginia Public School Educators Virginia public school K-12 educators and leaders seeking a professional learning community that meets online, can register for EL Monthly Conversations, hosted by the Coordinator of English Learner Instruction. LIEP Models Course for Virginia Public School Educators Language Instruction Educational Program (LIEP) Models in Virginia is a free online self-paced Canvas course created by educators for educators. Participants who enroll in this course will analyze the different LIEP models, identify the research behind the models, and apply knowledge about LIEP models to their own educational settings. To register you must be a Virginia K-12 educator or leader and use your Virginia school division email. NASA Opportunities for High School Students Virginia Space Coast Scholars: High school sophomores focus on the science, engineering, and technology integral to current missions at NASA Wallops Flight Facility and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport. Applications due by October 24. Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars: High school junior and senior students selected to participate in the program are immersed in NASA-related research through interaction with scientists, engineers and technologists. Virginia Earth System Science Scholars: High school juniors and seniors in the program will engage in NASA’s satellite missions designed to improve understanding of our own planet’s complex systems through the power of remote sensing. Bring the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts into your Classroom! Join the VMFA for free videoconferences in the galleries with a museum educator, who will invite students in grades 3-12, to make personal connections with objects and expand their understanding of topics being explored in the classroom. Sessions are approximately 50 minutes and designed to help students hone creative, critical, and reflective thinking skills as they engage with and interpret works of art. VAST 2023 Donna Sterling Institute-November 16 The Virginia Association of Science Teachers is offering the institute for K-12 science teachers to be held at the Hotel Roanoke. Participants will learn how to implement engineering PBLs in the classroom, engage in activities to support understanding of engineering and transportation science and apply key components of an e-PBL unit to meet the needs of students aligned to the 2018 Science SOL.
