Fine Arts Leadership PLC Meeting
VDOE is hosting opportunities for fine arts division leadership to hear from the VDOE fine arts program staff on current topics facing art education, as well as an opportunity to collaborate as a professional learning community.

Fine Arts Educators are Needed for VDOE Committee
To support the implementation of the Digital Learning Integration Standards of Learning, the Virginia Department of Education is seeking nominations for individuals who are qualified and available to identify alignments between the Digital Learning Integration Standards of Learning and content area Standards of Learning and provide optional instructional strategies for use by educators. Nominees should be teachers, curriculum specialists, or other educators who have knowledge of the various content areas. See Supts Memo 044-22 for additional information and to apply.
English Learner Needs Assessment for Virginia School Divisions
Welcome to Jo-el Cox, the new VDOE Coordinator of English Learner Instruction! Fine arts division leaders and educators have an opportunity to provide input for support needed for English learner instruction. Fill out the English Learner Needs Assessment for Virginia School Divisions today!
Your responses to the questions will help guide the planning and preparation for upcoming professional learning opportunities during the 2022-2023 school year. Please share this link with others in the division whose input may be beneficial.

National Museum of the Marine Corps Art Contest - The National Museum of the Marine Corps’ (NMMC) Fourth Third Annual Marine Corps Student Art Competition will open on March 1, 2022, to all U.S. students, grades K-12. The theme for the NMMC’s art competition is “Honor, Courage, Commitment.” Student artists are asked to create 2D art which visually shows what “Honor, Courage, Commitment.” means. Suggestions include, but are not limited to: Marines and their families, Marines in U.S. history, being patriotic, brotherhood, and combat support. See submission rules and requirements here.
Virginia Holocaust Museum Art Contest: Richmond has become home to many Holocaust and contemporary genocide survivors and refugees. It is the Virginia Holocaust Museum’s mission to tell those stories, educating and helping to ensure that the words “Never Again,” are someday realized. For the 2022 art contest show us through your artwork the stories of local survivors and how they have inspired you!
Free Professional Learning from Local Motion Project: These sessions are free to participants- and are supported by the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Follow links to learn more.
Study Group Opportunity for Music Educators: The Berklee Institute for Arts Education and Special Needs will offer its free virtual study group for music educators to help them better reach every student in lesson, ensemble and class settings. The study group will take place in April and May 2022, and participants can attend synchronously or asynchronously. Participation is free; advance registration is required.
Free Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Exhibition Admission for Educators: Commonwealth of Virginia employees and preschool and K–12 teachers (public and private) can receive free admission to the exhibition Tsherin Sherpa: Spirits on view at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) until October 16, 2022.

Hampton Roads Student Art Gallery - Tidewater art education coordinators, in collaboration with the Chrysler Museum of Art and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, are excited to share this year's virtual exhibition. The exhibit includes artwork from over 350 students spanning the entire Tidewater area, including students from the Eastern Shore.

CHS director of 40 years earns national recognition before saying goodbye - Congratulations to Laura Mulligan Thomas (Charlottesville City Schools) for her recent award from the American String Teachers Association.

Acting Behind the Scenes - Teacher and performer Desirée Dabney (Richmond Public Schools) digs in to benefit the next generation of stars… “She’s literally amazing,” enthuses LaTonya Waller, principal at Boushall, where Dabney has taught since 2019. “She has been instrumental in coordinating our programs on a cross-curricular basis across the arts, not just theater but visual arts, dance and music.”

City Students' Art On Display At Valley Mall - The Youth Art Month Show highlights artwork created by students from each school in Harrisonburg City. More than 200 pieces will be exhibited at the venue. Pieces were selected for the show by the city school’s art teachers: Jauan Brooks, Kelley Shradley-Horst, Sarah Waldrop, Mariah Flick, Angel Moreno Holly Kincaid, Erin Conway, Melanie Connors, Brooke Imber, Eva Camunas, Janae Yoder, Laura-Paige Keller, and Gemma Amendola.

Nelson County High School's one-act play team wins state championship - NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — Nelson County High School's one-act play team is winning big. The team won the Virginia High School League Theatre Festival State Championship in December. Congratulations to Diana Driver, and the students at Nelson County High School.

The Alma Ensemble presents “Welcome the Light!”: a collaborative concert - On Monday, April 4th, in collaboration with the Taubman Museum of Art, Roanoke City Public Schools, and the Roanoke Arts Commission, the Alma Ensemble will present “Welcome the Light!” Patrick Henry High School Orchestra (Jeff Midkiff, director) and William Fleming High School Orchestra (Yi-Wen Evans, director) will perform a variety of works alongside Alma Ensemble and present the world premiere of Deborah Baker Monday’s newest work, “Welcome the Light!” The performance will be held April 4, 2022 at the Taubman Museum of Art at 6:30pm. National Art Educator of the Year
Congratulations to Virginia's own Pat Franklin for being named the National Art Educator of the Year from the National Art Education Association (NAEA)! Pat's long history of outstanding work as an educator and arts education leader was recognized at the NAEA National Convention in March 2022.
