Data is everywhere, and it often talks to us if we listen. Schools have demographic data, student learning data, and process and perception data. These multiple measures of data help to create, implement and sustain the vision and the framework for each school. The data that your team collects, monitors and evaluates speaks specifically to where your school is in the continuum of continuous school improvement and growth. Continuous school improvement is not only about closing gaps, but it demonstrates a commitment to the growth of each student.
This issue of Quality Quick Takes provides a tool to review school-level practices regarding the collection and analysis of data. We know there are some teams that are approaching data collaboratively with a growth mindset, consistency, vulnerability, and confidence. We encourage you to nominate those folks using our Leadership Spotlight link.
Remember that no matter where you are headed, the journey starts and ends with data.
Working together in service. OneTeam!

Support for High-Quality Educational Environments
Data analysis and effective assessment practices are essential for schools to determine whether they are accomplishing their core mission of developing students’ academic knowledge and skills and their social-emotional skills as outlined in the Virginia Standards of Learning. These aspects of educational programming are intrinsically linked, and valid and reliable assessments are needed to produce data to support decisions in individual classrooms, whole schools, and even entire districts. Consequently, principals and other school leaders play a vital role in ensuring that teachers and other stakeholders understand the purpose of assessments, have access to appropriate supports to analyze data generated via assessments and from other sources, and use consistent protocols to collect, examine, and interpret data.
This research brief from Hanover Research reviews research and best practices in the areas of data analysis and assessment practices. Principals can use this resource to bolster their own knowledge and to identify actionable guidance to build schoolwide capacity to analyze data and assess student outcomes effectively.
