Arlington has seen a recent increase in the use of electric mobility devices, like e-bikes and e-scooters. While we're happy to see more biking in the community, we're also seeing an uptick in crashes involving more powerful, faster e-moto devices, frequently involving youth. When choosing a vehicle for yourself or someone else, it's important to know the difference between e-bikes and e-motos:

• E-motos can reach up to 65mph, they are generally not appropriate for a teen.
• E-bikes typically have a maximum speed up to 20mph (some up to 28mph), they may be appropriate for an older teen based on their level of training and experience.
• E-bikes and e-motos are not suitable for children. 

No matter what age you are using an e-bike or e-moto, make sure you are following traffic laws and we strongly suggest wearing a helmet. Click here to learn more about E-Device safety.

2026-2030 Vision Zero Final Action Plan

The finalized 2026 Action Plan Update is now live on the Vision Zero website! We would like to thank everyone who took the time to share feedback and help shape our program for the next five years. Click here to read a summary of the feedback that we received during the Phase 2 Engagement and how we used it to update the draft Action Plan.   The Action Plan outlines our program structure and new action items that will move us toward our goal of eliminating severe and fatal crashes by 2030.   At the July 18 County Board Meeting, the Board approved our request to advertise the 2026 Action Plan Update. Therefore, the Vision Zero team will present the 2026 Action Plan at the September 19 County Board Meeting for review and vote. Stay tuned for updated on the Action Plan update process over the next two months.

Action Spots 2025 Wrap Up and New 2026 Locations

Every year, Arlington identifies intersections or locations with relatively high crash rates by travel mode (e.g., vehicles, bikes, pedestrians). Many of these locations have projects in the works or have been recently updated. Others may not, so we designate these locations as “Action Spots” to ensure a path forward for improvements. County staff investigate each Action Spot location and identify safety measures as a next step. This summer, we officially wrapped up documentation on the 2025 Action Spots Analysis and reassessed our crash data to identify our 2026 Action Spots.   Visit the Action Spot webpage to learn more about the methodology and our work on Action Spots.

New Pilot Launching at Westbound Langston Blvd & Ft Myer Dr

In August, Arlington County will implement a pilot signal modification project at the intersection of westbound Langston Blvd and Fort Myer Dr. This pilot project will modify the intersection’s signal phases to remove potentially conflicting turning movements from the west and south crosswalks. Once the pilot is installed, there will be no potentially conflicting signal phases at the intersection. To learn more, read the pilot infosheet.

Carlin Springs High-Injury Network Safety Audit

Earlier this month, the County conducted the Carlin Springs Rd High-Injury Network (HIN) safety audit. County staff walked the from 2^nd St N to 7^th Rd S, the section of Carlin Springs Rd identified on the HIN, and conducted a detailed crash analysis to identify quick-action safety measures. The evaluation also allowed staff to highlight opportunities for longer-term safety measures.

The safety audit was held in advance of several projects happening along this HIN corridor:

• The currently underway S Carlin Springs Rd Pedestrian Improvements
• The VHC Health Wellness & Behavioral Health Facility site plan review.
• A corridor study of each North Carlin Springs Rd and South Carlin Springs Rd will kick off later this year and early next, respectively. These studies will recommend larger-scale improvements for consideration in the Capital Improvement Plan

Arlington’s Transportation Future: Multimodal Transportation Draft Plan

After nearly two years of planning and community input, the refreshed Multimodal Transportation Plan (MTP) is ready for review! The draft includes policies, strategies, transportation network guidance, and curb lane priorities that advance the community-informed and County Board-endorsed vision for a safe, connected, and sustainable transportation system.   Please review the draft plan and share your feedback through Sunday August 23rd, 2026.  Attend an event near you or share your input through the Online Feedback Form. Arlington County Featured in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Safe System Success Stories

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) worked with the Vision Zero Network, Institute of Transportation Engineers and others to develop a set of “celebration case studies” highlighting tangible progress on Vision Zero featuring a case study on Arlington County’s continued work to manage speed and implement intersection treatments for pedestrian safety. Speed Safety Cameras Operating During 2026 Summer School

PhotoSPEED safety cameras located at Summer School locations will remain operational throughout the duration of Arlington Public School summer learning, through July 31.   Summer School PhotoSPEED Locations   The PhotoSPEED safety cameras at the following locations will remain operational during Summer School:  SB Unit block of S. Carlin Springs Road EB 3500 block of 2nd Street S. SB 1900 block of S. George Mason Drive NB 1900 block of S. George Mason Drive NB 1600 block of N. Veitch Street Speed safety cameras are operational when the school zone lights (beacons) flash during school arrival and departure. Violators will be issued a $100 ticket (civil fine) per infraction to the vehicle’s registered owner.    What is PhotoSPEED?   PhotoSPEED is part of Arlington County’s Automated Safety Enforcement Program and identifies automated speed enforcement as a tool to lower speeds and enhance equity in enforcement. Safety-Driven Capital Project Updates:

• Fort Myer Sidewalk Improvements Project: Crews have started preparation for the Fort Myer Sidewalk Improvements project on Fort Myer Drive at Gateway Park, and at two adjacent intersections. This work will make pedestrian and bike travel through the area safer. Construction will start in spring of 2026 and will be completed in spring of 2027, as weather allows.
• Army Navy Drive Protected Bike Lane: Beginning Monday, July 20, Army Navy Drive from Joyce Street to Memorial Drive will be milled and repaved followed by the installation of pavement markings and traffic control devices. This work will add a two-way bike lane on Army Navy Drive between South Joyce St and Memorial Drive and will connect with completed improvements on Army Navy Drive east of South Joyce Street.
• South Walter Reed Drive Complete Streets Improvements: Construction is in progress with a target for the new traffic signal at S Walter Reed Dr & 9^th St S to be in operational before the start of school on August 31.

• 12th St S & S Eads St: Addition of protected eastbound and westbound left-turn as part of the transitway project. – Installed
