When driving, your speed matters. A person driving at 20mph has double the field of vision and can stop twice as quickly compared to a person driving 30mph. This January, Arlington is expanding our speed safety camera program to help improve compliance with 20mph speed limits in school zones. Do your part by slowing down; it can save a life. Tactical Bus Platform Safety Pilot
S Glebe Rd & S Old Glebe Rd: Share your feedback on the S Glebe Rd & Old Glebe Rd Tactical Bus Platform Safety Pilot. The pilot uses low-cost installation solutions to shorten crossing distances, remove a non-essential turn lane, and reduce vehicle conflict points with pedestrians and buses. The temporary bus platform helps to maintain access to the bus stop since the right turn lane/bus loading area was closed using the flex posts.
Tactical Speed Humps Safety Pilot Round 2
Share your feedback on the impacts of the tactical speed humps. The second round of locations installed in the County in 2024 have shown significant decreases in driver speeds, with a 26-72% reduction in drivers traveling over 20mph. Below are the locations of the pilot:
-
Jefferson Middle / Fleet Elementary: S Irving St between Arlington Blvd & 2nd St S (installed 2024)
-
Drew Elementary: 22nd St S between S Monroe St and S Kenmore St (installed 2024)
-
Wakefield High / Claremont Elementary: S Dinwiddie St between S George Mason Dr & S Chesterfield Rd (installed 2024)
-
Cardinal Elementary School: 19th St N between N Madison St & N Lexington St (installed 2023)
-
Hoffman Boston Elementary School: S Queen St between 12th St S and 13th Rd S (installed 2023)
-

Pathway from Crystal City to National Airport
Arlington is making it easier to walk, bike, or fly with the upcoming CC2DCA Multimodal Connection. This project will create a safe, direct pathway linking Crystal City to Regan National Airport. Attend the Public Open House on Jan. 29.
Performance Parking Pilot
In May 2023, Arlington was awarded $80,000 in short-term consultant assistance from the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board for a Regionwide, Data-Driven Anti-Drunk Driving project. Arlington submitted the request for professional services in partnership with the region’s other Vision Zero jurisdictions: Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, City of Alexandria, Fairfax County, and the District Department of Transportation.
The objectives for the project were to:
-
Research successful anti-drunk driving strategies,
-
Analyze local data to identify drunk driving patterns,
-
Create a strategic package of recommendations for regional municipalities to address local drunk driving issues,
-
Foster a consistent anti-drunk driving strategy across the region, and
-
Inform future development of anti-drunk driving campaigns.
The Regional Anti-Drunk Driving Report details the consultant team’s findings and analysis results. It includes recommendations from the consultant team on various actions that local jurisdictions can initiate both together and individually to address drunk driving challenges. Recommendations range from actions related to planning, prevention, legal, communications, treatment, and evaluation.
Arlington is evaluating next steps to address drunk driving in partnership with other local agencies using this report as a resource and looks forward to sharing updates on our initiatives.

Military Rd. & Nelly Custis Dr. Project Update – Arlington County has reached the % design milestone for the intersection Military Road and Nelly Custis Drive. The exhibit drawing shows the landscape proposal for the roundabout, pavement markings, location of bioretention's, and new streetlights. The project team is preparing for construction at the intersection, which is expected to begin in the summer of 2025, after a contract is procured and a schedule is established.
The County identifies intersections and locations that experience a high number of crashes through the Hot Spot Program. The goal of the program is to use data to quickly implement proven safety measures.
The 2024 Hot Spot Map identified 34 new and 26 recurrent crash locations. Since the release of the 2024 Hot Spot Map, the Vision Zero project team has tracked progress on the 34 newly identified locations and found:
-
20 locations had recent or upcoming projects or improvements. For these locations, we checked to ensure that the projects would address any identified crash patterns and assessed outcomes of any recently implemented projects.
-
Eight (8) locations where we installed improvements or have improvements pending as a result of each location’s hot spot analysis. Improvements to hot spot locations included refreshed paving markings, updating signal patterns, and curb extensions and other tactical improvements.
-
Two (2) locations with final recommendations and action pending.
-
Four (4) locations to be coordinated directly with the Virginia Department of Transportation. These hot spots are on segments completely owned and operated by the state, so improvements will be coordinated directly by the State.
In 2025, we will finalize all action items listed above and review the 26 hot spots that were repeat locations from previous hot spot years. These evaluations will assess whether past improvements made at each location are working or if additional treatments are needed.
We will adjust our hot spot program to be conducted on an annual basis (rather than biannual) to ensure quicker identification and response to new crash trends. Look out for more information on the hot spot program cycle this spring!
