Share Your Thoughts on Arlington’s New 20MPH School Slow Zones by May 9!

We installed demonstration school slow zones around 13 schools in early 2022. A school slow zone is a permanent 20 mile-per-hour speed limit on a neighborhood street within 600 feet of a key access point to a school (learn more about school slow zones here).

Because school slow zones are a new safety treatment in Arlington, these demonstrations will test whether the school slow zone policy effectively reduces speeds around schools before installing them at all schools in the County.

School Slow Zone

Please answer this seven-question form to help us understand how the demonstration projects are working and how they can be improved.

We will apply the feedback received via this form combined with before/after speed data in the demonstration locations to finalize our school zone policy and deploy such zones at all schools in Arlington over the next several years.

New Pilot Project Launches at Patrick Henry Dr & 18th St N – School Crossing Safety

The intersection of Patrick Henry Dr & 18th St N was identified in coordination with Arlington Public Schools in 2021 when Cardinal Elementary, a new neighborhood school, opened and generated more pedestrian activity across Patrick Henry Dr. This is a unique location where an uncontrolled school pedestrian crossing over an arterial (higher volume) roadway.

Data collection on Patrick Henry Dr confirmed speeding concerns cited by the community and led to this pilot project. This pilot will add new school crossing signage, speed signage, and pavement markings intended to (1) reduce vehicle speed traveling on Patrick Henry Dr and (2) increase visibility and awareness of people crossing at 18th St N.

County teams will install the pilot this month. Then over the next several months, we will assess before and after conditions (vehicle speeds and driver yielding behavior to people in the crosswalk) and use the findings to determine whether to considered applying the same treatment at similar uncontrolled arterial pedestrian crosswalks near schools throughout the County.
