Social Determinants of Health: Improving Health Outcomes Through Our Cultures, Communities, and Connections Virtual Roundtable
In honor of National Minority Health Month 2024, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) invites you to join a virtual roundtable on Tuesday April 30, 2024, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. ET to discuss the ways in which the conditions of the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age (known as social determinants of health, or SDOH) affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.
In addition to providing an overview of SDOH, the discussion will explore efforts and interventions leveraging health care payment approaches and health-related social needs data to address minority health disparities. Audience members will be encouraged to submit questions for a 10-minute Q&A session at the end of the convening.
Tuesday April 30, 1:00-2:00 p.m. ET.

April 24-30 is World Immunization Week
World Immunization Week is an annual observance led by the World Health Organization. This year’s theme, Humanly Possible: Saving lives through immunization, celebrates 50 years of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI). This effort started with protecting all children against 6 childhood illnesses, and this number has grown to 13 universally recommended vaccines across the life course.

Instrumentation Grant Program for Resource-Limited Institutions
Grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support the purchase of state-of-the-art scientific instruments enhancing the research and educational missions of resource-limited institutions.

Exploratory Grants in Cancer Control
Grant from NIH to support research focusing on different aspects of cancer control by modifying behavior, screening, and understanding etiologic factors contributing to the development of cancer, and developing ways to control cancer.

Help the Stars Align During National Donate Life Month

In 2023, we witnessed a remarkable milestone with over 46,000 organ transplants performed. However, the need is still urgent. Report: The Nature of the Rural-Urban Mortality Gap
The USDA Economic Research Service published a report exploring how working-age (ages 25–54) natural-cause mortality varies by individual characteristics and by regions of the country. The report also examines the population by sex, race and ethnicity, region, and state and found both an increase in the rural, prime working-age natural-cause mortality rates and a decrease in the corresponding urban rates are contributing to the growing mortality gap.

Practical Playbook for Addressing Health Misinformation
The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security published the Practical playbook for addressing health misinformation, a guide to help users prepare for and respond to health misinformation.
The playbook takes a hands-on approach to help public health practitioners, medical professionals, and health communicators recognize and respond to health-related rumors and misinformation. It provides detailed tools, checklists, templates, and examples written in plain language.

Evaluating the Fade to Fitness Program: A Barbershop-based Program for Black Men
This study, sponsored by the University of South Carolina in collaboration with the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, will assess the acceptability, demand, implementation, and practicality of a targeted intervention designed to improve the holistic health and quality of life among Black men. This study will take place in Columbia, South Carolina.
Liver Cancer Disparities in American Indian and Alaska Native Persons
This study, sponsored by the University of Washington in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, will conduct a randomized controlled trial comparing two methods of screening for liver cancer in American Indian/Alaska Native patients with cirrhosis. This study will take place in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

Communicating About Vaccines
During this course from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, participants will learn how to describe at least two best practices for communicating about vaccines and how to select and apply a response strategy to vaccine misinformation. This course is geared towards public health and clinical practitioners, community health centers staff, and social services personnel working in community settings. Continuing education credit is available.

Promoting Indigenous Research Leadership
The three-day workshop held November 18-20 from the Center for American Indian and Rural Health Equity is designed to promote the public health research careers of Indigenous and other early-career faculty working with Indigenous communities across the country.
