Special Edition FYI Weekly Health Resources for August 7

Every Monday in August, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) is bringing you an extra edition of its FYI: Weekly Health Resources newsletter to help you catch up on OMH’s health equity-promoting activities and resources you may have missed so far in 2023. You will continue to receive the regular FYI: Weekly Health Resources every Wednesday.

Did you know that one way OMH supports its mission to improve the health of racial and ethnic minority populations is by collecting, analyzing, and reporting data? In this week’s special edition newsletter, we’re highlighting the ways OMH has used minority health data this year to bring awareness to the health disparities impacting racial and ethnic minority communities in the U.S.

Black/African American Population Profile

Using data to identify health disparities in racial and ethnic minority populations is important for developing interventions and directing resources to address them as well as for assessing progress toward achieving greater equity over time.

In February 2023, OMH added updated statistics to its Black/African American Population Profile. Visit and share the OMH site to bring awareness to the specific health disparities impacting Black and African Americans.

Minority Health Social Vulnerability Index (SVI)

The Minority Health Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) - developed through a partnership between OMH and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - can be used to apply a health equity lens to research, strategic planning, program design, and evaluation related to response and recovery for disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies.

The Minority Health SVI was updated in June 2023 using U.S. Census data. Visit the OMH site to learn more about the SVI and how it can help prepare vulnerable communities for disasters and emergencies.
