2023 Minority Health Data Updates

Using data to identify health disparities in racial and ethnic minority populations is important for developing interventions and directing resources to address them as well as for assessing progress toward achieving greater equity over time.
In February 2023, OMH added updated statistics to its Black/African American Population Profile. Visit and share the OMH site to bring awareness to the specific health disparities impacting Black and African Americans.

The Minority Health Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) - developed through a partnership between OMH and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - can be used to apply a health equity lens to research, strategic planning, program design, and evaluation related to response and recovery for disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies.
The Minority Health SVI was updated in June 2023 using U.S. Census data. Visit the OMH site to learn more about the SVI and how it can help prepare vulnerable communities for disasters and emergencies.

In June, OMH released three resource guides to provide guidance on best practices to advance cultural competency, language access, and sensitivity toward Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) communities in the context of the Federal COVID-19 response.
One of these guides, the “Data Disaggregation Resource Guide,” provides guidance on best practices, strategies, and actions to improve the collection, use, and reporting of disaggregated data on AA and NHPI populations related to COVID-19.

In May, in honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2023, OMH developed the “Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in High-Vulnerability Counties” infographic to illustrate how the places we live, work, and play can impact health outcomes for AAs and NHPIs.
