A Message from the Director of the Research, Innovation, Synergies, and Education (RISE) Division in the NSF Geosciences Directorate
Dear Colleagues,
On October 10, I began as Director of the new Research, Innovation, Synergies, and Education (RISE) Division in NSF’s Directorate for Geosciences (GEO). RISE represents an exciting opportunity for the Geosciences community to push the boundaries of knowledge and innovation, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.
The mission of RISE is to foster transdisciplinary collaborations that engage the broader community to drive transformative discoveries, innovations in workforce development, and use-inspired solutions for urgent Earth system challenges. The potential RISE portfolio is astonishingly broad—and will begin by incubating new research and education programs in five key areas.
These five RISE incubators will build new partnerships and pilot innovative programs to develop the knowledge, workforce, and translational solutions needed to have real-world impact. RISE programs will expand funding opportunities across the entire GEO community through collaborations with other NSF Directorates and external organizations.
Research and education in these five critical areas will highlight the value of the geosciences to the U.S. economy, national security, and societal well-being. The incubators will support work to build a resilient Earth--one of NSF’s top priorities moving forward--and provide an important connection point to NSF’s Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships, or TIP, Directorate. Notably, the incubators crosscut GEO’s Atmospheric & Geospace Sciences, Earth Sciences, Ocean Sciences Divisions and Office of Polar Programs, allowing transdisciplinary advancement across all geoscience fields.
Over the next few months RISE representatives will be at National Science Foundation booths at the AGU, AMS and OSM meetings. We look forward to meeting you and brainstorming important new initiatives to position the geosciences at the center of collaborative, innovative solutions to critical issues facing our planet. Please stop by to say hello!

Wendy Graham, PhD RISE Division Director
