2013 Summer Regional Meeting: Registration Open

This summer, NIST MEP will be hosting two regional meetings for center leadership and other relevant staff to discuss the status of the MEP system, changes in manufacturing, and how best to position the MEP to provide these services going forward. These meetings provide MEP with the opportunity to ensure center staff are educated and aware of the latest tools, topics, and goals of the MEP system.

The first meeting will be held June 25th and 26th in Denver, CO in conjunction with the MEP Advisory Board Meeting, which will be on June 24th. The second meeting will be held July 23rd and 24th in Philadelphia, PA. Based on locations we assume that the Pacific Northwest, Southwest and Midwest centers will attend the Denver meeting, and the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast centers will attend in Philadelphia. However, both events are open to everyone.

Some of the topics that will be covered at these meetings include:

1. Overview of the NIST MEP Strategic Plan
2. Update on the MEP System Collaboratory
3. Center and Project Impact Analysis
4. Market Industry Analysis & Outlook
5. Panel Discussion: Engaging a CEO in Transformational Dialog

In order to register for these meetings, please click the link below for the appropriate meeting. The event page will have additional information including meeting logistics, registration, draft agenda, etc. The registration fee for each meeting will be $250/person.

Federal Funding Opportunity

The Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA.gov) at the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is gearing up to announce a funding opportunity that may interest MEP centers; it is aimed at mitigating the impact of defense spending changes on communities, workers, and suppliers in the defense industry supply chain. OEA is planning to release the announcement in late May.

Assistance provided by DOD under the award will support regions in organizing, planning and carrying out economic adjustment programs that seek to stimulate and guide economic development adjustment efforts in a community or region. Adequately identifying and addressing the myriad of possibilities will take a coordinated effort among MEP Centers, OEA grantees, State, regional, and local economic development organizations; the Small Business Administration’s Small Business Development Centers as well as local SBA District offices; and U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration grantees, including Workforce Investment Boards and/or One Stop Centers.

We will keep you posted as more details become available. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact Mark Schmit at mark.schmit@nist.gov (301) 975-3255.

What NIST MEP is Reading

25 Recommendations for the Reauthorization of the 2013 America COMPETES Act
Stephen Ezell and Robert Atkinson, ITIF

ITIF authors Stephen Ezell and Robert Atkinson offer a series of reforms designed to revamp the U.S. innovation system and spur additional investment in science and technology. They propose a new approach to transform the U.S. innovation system in three key areas including: (1) spurring innovation and technology commercialization; (2) introducing federal institutional reforms to spur innovation; and (3) enhancing STEM education. Of the 25 recommendations proposed, twelve require no new investment, and another four can be done with less than $10 million in new investment. Among the recommendations is increased funding for the MEP program to $175 million in FY 2014 and $200 million in FY 2015.
