The January Update Meeting is Here!
There are over 150 from across the MEP network registered for the January Update Meeting. It's another opportunity for us to gain important information and strategize on how to fulfill our mission of improving U.S. manufacturing and the competitiveness of manufacturers. Update: Clarification of Date The January Update Meeting will be held in in St. Louis, Missouri, at the Union Station DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel starting at 1:00 p.m. this Tuesday, January 29,2013 in Regency Ballroom C. Registration will be open at noon.
Highlights of the Agenda include:
- MEP system year in review; preview of next 12 months
- Lessons learned from high performing centers in CORE
- Peer discussions about innovation practice success
- (New!) Learning Lab: presentation and discussion of new system capacity building effort

The Geographic Concentration of Manufacturing Across the United States Economics and Statistics Administration, DOC
The Department of Commerce Economics & Statistics Administration, has released a report, The Geographic Concentration of Manufacturing Across the United States, examining county-leveled data to assess the importance of manufacturing in local economies throughout the U.S. and find that, although almost all states include some counties where manufacturing accounts for a significant share of jobs and earnings, such counties are concentrated in the Midwest and the South, are more likely to be outside metropolitan areas, and are relatively small. Cut to Invest: Support the Designation of 20 "U.S. Manufacturing Universities" Brookings Institution
Cut to Invest: Support the Designation of 20 "U.S. Manufacturing Universities, proposes that Congress should establish an initiative to designate 20 institutions of higher education as “U.S. Manufacturing Universities” as part of a needed push to strengthen the position of the United States in the increasingly innovation-driven global economy. In 1862, Congress passed the Morrill Act, which established land-grant colleges to promote learning in “agriculture and the mechanic arts.” These colleges played a key role in enabling the United States to later take the lead in the mechanization of agriculture and the industrialization of the economy. Today, the challenge is even greater as America competes against a wide array of nations seeking to win the race for global innovation advantage, especially in advanced manufacturing. LIFT Solutions Fair January 30, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EST
Solutions Fair is a half day event that brings together small and medium sized manufacturing companies with resource representatives that are willing and able to help these companies solve problems. The resources could include specialized researchers, process experts, prototyping advisors, technology matching specialists and other types of services. The main portion of a Solutions Fair uses short (~15 min) one-on-one meetings between a company representative and a resource representative with a focus on a specific problem they are in need of solving. The companies then rotate through and meet multiple resources during the event. Click here for more information and to register.
